Shooting On Eaglecrest High School Campus Sends 1 To Hospital

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - One person was rushed to the hospital Sunday morning from the athletic fields behind Eaglecrest High School following a shooting. Another person is in police custody.

A spokesperson for the Arapahoe County Sheriff's office said the two people were neighbors. Both live in the neighborhood adjacent to the school property.

The incident, Arapahoe County Sheriff's Officre spokesperson Deborah Sherman told CBS4, was the culmination of an ongoing argument between two residents who live across the street from one another. The argument, she said, was over a parking space in the neighborhood.

The pair agreed to meet on school property Sunday morning.

At 9:40 a.m., the suspect called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers, "I just shot my neighbor, I'm going home," Sherman said.

CBS4 found a crime scene in a parking lot between Eaglecrest High School and Thunder Ridge Middle School. Eaglecrest's athletic fields and running track are nearby. The two schools share an open park.

According to police radio traffic during the incident, armed officers from three agencies -- ACSO and Aurora and Denver police departments -- surrounded a home in the 5000 block of South Rome Street directly to the east of the school.

CBS4's Michael Abeyta found police cars guarding an entrance to that neighborhood.

Sherman said the suspect came out of the house without resistance when police officers commanded him to surrender.

"He basically turned himself in," she said.

Police have not announced a condition of the person who was shot, nor any identities of those involved.
