In March, 1922 the site of the new St. Mary College an 80-acre wooded tract in a developing area of northwest Detroit was purchased.
Announced in 2018 and located on the historic Marygrove campus in the heart of northwest Detroit, the P-20 Partnership is a landmark cradle-to-career educational partnership that will offer pre-K through graduate school studies with community services and programs. The campus will include a state-of-the-art early childhood education center, a new K-12 school, and an innovative teacher education program.
The partnership is one of the first of its kind in the nation. Partners include the Marygrove Conservancy, the University of Michigan School of Education (U-M SOE), Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), Starfish Family Services, IFF, the Detroit Collaborative Design Center of the University of Detroit Mercy, and The Kresge Foundation, which has provided a $50-million commitment to the partnership — the largest philanthropic investment in history into a Detroit neighborhood.

The U-M SOE is co-developing the instructional and operational model for the campus. Leveraging nationally renowned educational research, U-M faculty and staff have worked closely with DPSCD to identify and curate a high-quality curriculum for the school. The SOE will also launch a new teacher residency program at the school modeled after physician training programs to prepare and train Detroit’s next generation of educators. At full capacity, The School at Marygrove and new early childhood education center are projected to serve more than 1,000 Detroit children and their families living in the surrounding neighborhoods.
