An open house is being held tomorrow morning (Aug. 5) at the new Griffin Park Storm Shelter in Pierre.
City Parks and Recreation director Tom Farnsworth says there’s a ribbon cutting at 11am with the open house going until 12:30pm.
Farnsworth says there are about 1,800 people living within about a half a mile of the shelter and each summer the Griffin Park campground hosts an average of 1000 camping units. He says regardless of weather, the Griffin Park Storm Shelter serves as a comfort station for campers and park users.
Farnsworth says people can reserve the shelter’s community room to hold activities.
The 2,400 square foot structure is large enough to hold up to 400 people and is built to withstand 200 mph winds.
The $800,000 project was made possible by grants from the South Dakota Office of Emergency Management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and funding from the City of Pierre.
