GUWAHATI: Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that Assam will not a get an error free National Register of Citizens (NRC) on August 31 .
Supreme Court-monitored NRC will be published on August 31.

“ We have seen that in draft NRC several genuine Indian citizens names are not there and even there are instances of foreigners names getting included,” the former chief minister said.

Recently, the state government placed the district-wise data of draft NRC in state assembly. Several BJP MLAs questioned the fairness of the NRC process.

“Now BJP MLAs are questioning the NRC process, which means they are doubting the government that is responsible for preparing the NRC. I had a suspicion that NRC will not be error-free and now I am convinced that it will not be error-free, names of several Hindu Bengali, tea tribes, muslims are not there.”

“A government which cannot make an error free NRC in Assam is saying that it will roll out the NRC across the country. Earlier BJP led government was satisfied with NRC work now suddenly they find that it erroneous. Why has CM Sarbananda Sonowal not taken the matter up with the Home Ministry if it is not satisfied with the NRC work?” he asked.

Gogoi also said that government wants to delay the publication of NRC.

“ The NDA government came to power with a promise that it will free Assam from foreigners, how many foreigners were detected and deported in last five years, NRC updation has not barred the government from identifying the foreigners,” he said.

The former chief minister said that the NRC which the state will get will be nothing but waste paper.
