GUWAHATI: In a counter to BJP’s mission 100 seats for 2021 Assam assembly election, congress has set a mission of winning 80 seats.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, President Ripun Bora said, “We have set a mission to win 80 seats in the assembly polls. BJP’s mission 100 seats are unrealistic and exaggeration.”

He added, “To achieve our mission we have started work, our grass root workers will reach out to the people in the state.”

Former Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi said, “We will reach out to people and bring out before the falsehood of BJP led government in Assam.”

Congress on Saturday held extended executive meeting where the party dwelt on the Lok Sabha election debacle in the state.

BJP had in Lok sabha polls recently contested 10 out of 14 seats and won nine seats. However its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) contested three and one seat respectively but could not win any seats.

Recently Assam finance minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that party will devise strategy and plans to achieve its target of winning 100 seats in assembly polls.

BJP together with allies won 86 seats in 2016 assembly polls.

BJP won 60 seats while AGP and BPF had won 14 and 12 seats respectively in assembly polls. The ruling coalition was supported by one independent MLA.

In 2016 assembly polls AIUDF just won 13 seats and congress had won 25 seats. A congress MLA left the party and got re-elected on BJP ticket taking the Saffron party’s tally to 61 seats.

Congress which was ruling Assam since 2001 lost power in 2016. The party is facing repeated electoral drubbing. Even in 2019 parliamentary polls congress managed to wrest three seats.
