Mumbai: The political tussle in Maharashtra seems to have further intensified with governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari objecting to the state government’s decision to scrap the final year university exams even as the state battles the Covid-19 outbreak.

In a letter to state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday, Koshyari said that he as the “chancellor of universities has the final authority over all university matters as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act”. A press issued by Raj Bhavan stated that the governor had conveyed to CM Uddhav Thackeray that decision regarding holding of the examinations of final year students “shall be taken in consonance with the provisions of the Act”. Koshyari in his letter objected to the state government unilaterally deciding to cancel the exams without consulting him.

Koshyari said that the Committee of vice chancellors constituted by the minster for higher and technical education to analyse the situation and explore various options available to conduct the examinations, had prepared a report which had not presented to him. Koshyari also pointed out that during a video conference with VCs of state universities; they had communicated their preparedness for conducting their respective examinations. The governor has objected to the state government’s move to take aggregate marks of the previous semesters to the final year students.
