KOCHI: Kerala is gearing up to host its biennial Kerala Tourism Mart (KTM), one of the biggest tourism events in the country, in the aftermath of flood that caused a loss of Rs 2000 crore for the state tourism sector.

The four-day buyer- seller meet that will be inaugurated by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on September 27 in Kochi has drawn more delegates exceeding the expectations of the organisers. In all 1600 buyers from 66 countries and 325 sellers have confirmed participation.

"We were expecting a tepid response after floods. But there is 125% increase in international buyers and 75% in domestic buyers from the last KTM," said Baby Mathew, KTM society president. "We have put up additional 80 stalls."

Kerala tourism is hoping that KTM will restore the confidence of the travellers in visiting the state . "There have been lot of booking cancellations after the floods especially for the Pooja and Diwali holidays. Out of Rs 2000 crore loss, 1500 crore is from cancellations and the rest from infrastructure damage," said Abraham George, past president of KTM society and member of national tourism advisory council.

This year KTM is highlighting the potential of Malabar tourism which is expected to shift to high gear after the opening of international airport at Kannur, and responsible tourism. It will also be promoting new products like yoga, cruise tourism, Jatayu adventure centre, Muziris heritage project etc.
