Watch: Is Kanpur a failed city?
When the World Health Organisation (WHO) released a list of world’s most polluted cities in May 2018, Kanpur topped with PM 2.5 concentration of 173 micrograms per cubic metre. Also, the 400-odd tanneries of Kanpur are a major cause of water pollution with the pH level of Ganga waters being as high as 7.5-8.47 against permissible 6-7. The oxygen level has also dropped to 3.78 mg per litre against the acceptable level of 6 mg. There seems to be little political will to deal decisively with the problem.
