Palmeiras waited an hour but Deyverson’s header earned the home side all three points on Sunday.

Manager Luiz Felipe Scolari handed a debut to Paraguayan defender Gustavo Goméz, while Leandro Castán, Máxi Lopez and Vinícius Araújo all debuted for Vasco da Gama.

The away side almost took the lead early in unusual fashion. Yago Pikachu took a clever corner kick for the visitors but alert goalkeeping by Weverton prevented the gol olimpico in the 14th minute.

Jean hit a cross from the right wing into the center of the box and Deyverson beat Leandro Castán in the air. Goalkeeper Martín Silva did well to dive low and block the header in the 29th minute.

Seven minutes into the second half, Silva did not punch out a cross cleanly and the ball fell to Lucas Lima at the top of the area. The Palmeiras attacker tried to lift the ball over Silva but the goalkeeper showed great reactions by snatching the ball out of the air.

On the game’s only goal, Lima started the play with a superb ball over the top which allowed Hyoran to beat the offside line. Hyoran’s looping header came back off the crossbar and Deyverson was on-hand to head home the rebound in the 60th minute.

The referee initially signaled for a penalty in favour of Palmeiras in the 63rd minute but the assistant referee had flagged for offside. The same assistant raised his flag in the 65th minute when Gómez headed in a free kick but two of his team-mates were in offside positions.

The win at home moves Palmeiras up to 30 points and even with Atlético Mineiro, eight points behind league leaders São Paulo. On 19 points, Vasco da Gama are under threat of falling into the relegation zone.
