Lifeguard who saved a girl from drowning goes missing in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: A beach lifeguard who risked his life to save a girl from drowning at Shanghumughom beach went missing after executing his duty successfully. The missing guard is identified as Johnson Gabriel (43), of Abi House, a native of Shangumughom in Thiruvananthapuram. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening.

Amulya (21), a Munnar native woman and a staff of private company in Vazhuthakkad, had come to beach in the evening. She who stepped into the sea fell into waters. As she sank, Johnson dove into sea after her. Seeing the incident, Fahas, a staff at a coffee house nearby also joined him.

Johnson and Fahas rescued Amulya and brought her to the shore. Other lifeguards and people at the beach pulled her to the land. Meantime, Johnson into the water again and was trapped in high tide. In the fall, his head hit a stone and went unconscious. While others tried to save him, Johnson was washed away deep into the sea.

At the time of incident, the sea was extremely rough and had high tides. Meantime the injured girl was shifted to Medical College in the police vehicle. Fahas also sustained injuries in the incident.

On knowing the incident, locals and relatives of Johnson who reached the spot got into an argument with the lifeguards at the beach. They alleged the lifeguards didn’t attempt to save Johnson though they were standing close to him. A tensed situation erupted there as more people gathered at the spot. However, police intervened and dispersed the people.

Search for Johnson by marine enforcement and coastal guard is on. Johnson is survived by his wife Shalini and two children Abhi and Athira.
