Thiruvananthapuram: The Corporation Mayor criticized the district administration in connection with flooding in the capital city. Mayor S Sreekumar stated that the flood was caused by the opening of dam. However, Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran said that the dam was opened under extraordinary circumstances.
The area near the dam received 22 cm of rain in a single day. The Minister said that the dam’s shutters could have been opened by the officers concerned as it exceeded its capacity. However, the Mayor accused that it was opened without any warning.
The flooding did not take place at Thampanoor or East Fort, instead it took place near the shores of Karamana and Killiyar rivers. The Mayor pointed out that the shutters of Aruvikkara dams were opened at 2 am on Friday.
He also added that since there were no warnings issued, people living in the area could not be relocated and no safety precautions were taken.
