What to know about every University of Alabama construction project happening summer 2019

University of Alabama / AL.com

You might have noticed a few orange construction cones around Tuscaloosa, many of them spread across the University of Alabama campus, signifying future growth and another busy summer.

Construction takes up a huge chunk of the summertime, with UA intentionally doing as much work throughout the season as possible to minimize impact on students and faculty during fall and spring semesters.

UA's associate vice president for construction Tim Leopard updated us on every construction project happening on campus in summer 2019, along with other projects that will begin soon, collectively costing more than $400 million.

These include the Aquatic Center renovation, sorority and fraternity house upgrades, the brand new Hewson Hall and, of course, the Crimson Standard campaign to improve UA's sports venues.

"The contractors doing a fantastic job. We greatly appreciate the hard work they do," Leopard said. "I can't say how important they are to the University of Alabama, the men and women working the jobs. They don't get enough credit for what they do."

To see a full map of UA's ongoing projects, see photos of renderings and read about details surrounding them, visit ua.edu/map and click 'Construction.'

UA says more than 70,000 vehicles cross the train tracks running along the south edge of campus every day, with only two ways in and out of campus that go over the train tracks, both on the outer edges of campus.

The 2nd Avenue Overpass project will form a connection from 15th Street to Paul W. Bryant Drive (10th Street), creating a new and centrally located corridor into campus that won't be hampered by the train tracks. UA notes that the new road into campus will be helpful for emergency response and traffic flow during campus events.

The overpass will also be pedestrian and bike friendly. A 10-foot-wide bike/walking path and a 4-foot-wide protective space with a concrete barrier will be included in the project, along with plenty of lighting for pedestrian safety, according to UA.
