A Night at the Roxbury: Themed Catskills motel will take you out of this world

There is a place nestled among the picturesque Catskill Mountains that can turn your fantasy into reality.

It's the themed Roxbury Motel, where each room or suite is like living on the set of a TV show or movie from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. For nerds, there's a "Final Frontier" suite which has a fiber optic-shooting star light show. Remember the character Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island who had more practical skills than Ginger? Well, there's a "Maryann's Coconut Cream Pie," island room with a ceiling of whipped cream. Wizard of Oz lovers can sleep on a bed where a yellow brick road goes right through the center of the room and ends at a wall-size painting of the Emerald City.

Roxbury Motel

The Roxbury Motel looks like an average motor inn from a glance on the outside - until you notice its lime-green guest room doors.

Located in Delaware County on 2258 County Road 41 in Roxbury, the motel is about an hour-and-a-half drive from Poughkeepsie.

Don't Edit

Originally a basic roadside motel, owners Greg Henderson and Joseph Massa bought the place in 2003. They renovated the 11 rooms and added two multi-million dollar wings bringing the total to 28 rooms and suites, plus a spa.

Room rates range from $90 to $698.

Don't Edit

The location is remote and cell phone signal drops easily in this part of the Catskills. For directions to get here, it's best to use the site because mapping devices will take you for a loop.

Roxbury Motel offers direct access to Catskills Park and its 700,000 acres of New York State forest preserve and hiking trails. The grounds of the property have beautiful flowers and views of the mountains while a stream runs through the inn’s backyard. There's also a sauna, hot tub and massages at the Shimmer Spa. Breakfast is included in the Jetsetter rate. Best part? No two rooms are alike.

The Archaeologist's Digs

Inspired by the Indiana Jones movies, this stand-alone cottage has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, living and bar area, full gourmet kitchen, outdoor shower, and a large outdoor deck with two dining tables. It also has secret passageways, hidden treasure, Mayan temples and Egyptian tombs.

Don't Edit

The owners purchased much of the room's decor from an estate auction of a local world traveler. The items are from more than 25 countries, from Sweden to Senegal.

The Digs is definitely the crown jewel of the Roxbury Motel. It has a 400-gallon saltwater aquarium that forms the focal point of two different rooms in the luxury cottage. You can take a shower while the fish and Cleopatra's sarcophagus watches you.

Don't Edit

The gold leaf mahogany bed in the Cleopatra's bedroom weighs more than 500 lbs. It was made in Indonesia and got lost on its way to the U.S. in a typhoon in the Indian Ocean. Now. it's at the Digs. Also, the room's chandelier was hand made in Cairo. Plus, it also has a golden pharaoh throne chair and above the chair is Alexander the Great's war Mask.

If you want to feel like royalty, this is the room to stay in. That's why it costs anywhere from $505 to $698 per night.

Maryann's Coconut Cream Pie

Considered a big king theme room, this one is located in the North Wing. It's 100 square-feet larger than the already-large kitchenettes in the South Buildings. The room feels more like a studio apartment than a hotel room.

This room took seven months to make. It has an entire ceiling that looks like large dollops of whipped cream. This room is complete with pie crust crown molding and a circular bed.

The moving 20 foot-ceiling was designed by Fiber Optic Systems, who design fiber optic lighting systems for museums, restaurants, planetariums, and private homes all over the world. Star Trek fans will be staying in a suite with a ceiling that makes the room feel as if it is moving through space like a starship.

You will actually feel like you are inside a genie bottle. It took six months to create this perfectly spherical bathroom made of marble dust and glitter glass mosaic tiles sloping up to the mouth of the bottle that is a solar tube cutting through the roof of the building. Sip a cocktail while soaking in a luxurious 70-gallon Japanese tub. Yes, master!

Amadeus' Bride

For patrons who want something fab and magnificent, here's something brides often request.

Picture 1,100 linear-foot of handmade 18k gold leaf moldings framing more than 27 mirrors reflecting a 200 lb Austrian crystal chandelier creating an infinity of chandeliers topping a living area with 20-foot ceilings. Also, there's a 19x12 commissioned painting of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's wife court over the suite.

Fred's Lair

Yabba dabba doo! If you want to hibernate the winter away in this cave. The modern stone age room has 11 foot-tall pebblestone shower and bathroom area. The walls are 3-D textured and took four months to make.

Don't Edit

The bed throws are made of seven different kinds of faux fur while the mirrors made of driftwood off of the Dover coast of England.

Don't Edit

The entire floor of the bathroom area is also made of pebblestone. Fred and Wilma Flintstone would be jealous!

Don't Edit

Pretty sure the Flintstones didn't have a dark brown granite and marble vessel sink with a waterfall faucet.

Angel Hair

According to the site:

"Once upon a time there was a little boy who dreamed of going to the Police Academy. He also had a Farrah Fawcett poster in his room. He was obsessed with it in many ways, but mainly with the way her hair fell like a mane around her neck and shoulders. So the little boy grew up and created a steel sculpture of that hair and installed it as a canopy for a king size bed so that he could sleep underneath Farrah."

Karate kick and hands up!

After mounting the sculpture of Farrah's hair, the owners realized that it might be mistaken for Jaclyn's hair as well. So they named the sculpture 'Faralyn.'

The Wizard's Emeralds

Lots of green and a yellow brick road goes right through the center of the room until it joins into a wall-size painting of the Emerald City. The rest of the room sports different hues of green creating the owners' version of being inside the Emerald City.

Shimmery Spa

This spa is comprised of two different areas: The Shimmer Spa South and Shimmer Spa North.

North is across the street where you'll find 1,200 square-foot of spa space including "The Green Steam" (a large steam area made out of 100% recycled green car windshield glass), two completely private treatment rooms including one large enough for a simultaneous couples massage, and a whimsically elegant relaxation room library where you can shut out the outside world while lounging in cushy chaises.

Don't Edit

South is in the main buildings where you can go to relax in an intimate 600 square-foot mini-spa made of thousands of shimmering iridescent mosaic tiles complete with a hot tub, a dry sauna, a fireplace, a bathroom, and a shower made of black river rock that massages your feet while you take a shower.

Owners

The owners Greg Henderson (left) and Joseph Massa (right) are expats from Broadway. They are planning more magical and whimsical experiences in the Catskills.

In 2014, they purchased Roxbury's historic Stratton Falls waterfall and its adjoining mansion. Known as the Roxbury at Stratton Falls, the new property will feature a 50-foot waterfall, a trail system to the base of the falls, and a new spa and cabana with indoor/outdoor pool. The mansion will turn into a hotel. Think faeries, Cinderella, and Dracula! Rumors say they might be opening by fall.

The waterfall was the original town center of Roxbury, and a store and post office once stood at the top of the falls. A five-bedroom, two-bathroom mansion now sits on a hillside nearby.
