Southeast Portland will have a new Asian grocery store Friday when Shun Fat Supermarket opens in the location of a former Fred Meyer at Southeast 82nd Ave. and Foster Rd.

Some of the changes to the Fred Meyer store, which closed in January of 2018, are immediately apparent. The wide open parking lot is now surrounded by a black metal fence with angled points, corralling visitors in through specific gates.

Inside, the building has been partitioned into different individual businesses. Where once there was the Fred Meyer electronics department, now is a selection of gifts, decorations and furniture.

A jeweler has taken up residence at the former jewelry counter, possibly even making use of the existing Fred Meyer Jewelers sign.

Many other stalls remained empty on Wednesday evening. Current owner of the property, Terry Emmert, said as soon as leases are signed and permits are ready, these will be taken by vendors and restaurants, as well as a bank (as yet unnamed) and a pharmacy.

"The quality is off the chart," Emmert said Wednesday, as he walked through the new store. "I don't think anybody has a selection like this."

That selection includes fresh fish, meat and vegetables. It also includes live crab and fish.

"They want it fresh," Emmert said of the store's management. "They don't want stuff that's been frozen for three years."

On Wednesday, the fresh produce was still being stocked. But oranges, avocados and dragon fruit were already placed in their spots.
