Kaleb Anundi scored the last six points of the game (all free throws) in the final minute to lift third-seeded Stayton past sixth-seeded Henley 57-53 on Thursday night in a Class 4A boys basketball state quarterfinal at Pacific University in Forest Grove.
Anundi (nine rebounds) and Riley Nichol (12 rebounds) had 23 points apiece for Stayton, which led 33-27 at halftime. Jordan Butler added nine points for the Eagles (21-3) in a back-and-forth struggle that saw four lead changes.
Andrew Reynolds paced Henley with 19 points, and Braden Lawrie and Blake Loney pitched in nine apiece for the Hornets (17-8), who had won 10 of their past 11.
Two free throws by Loney put the Hornets ahead 49-45 with six minutes to go before the Eagles went on a 12-4 run to seal their 14th consecutive win.
Henley plays seventh-seeded North Marion in the second consolation game Friday morning.
Stayton advances to Friday’s second semifinal where it will face second-seeded Seaside. Stayton picked up a 56-49 nonleague win over Seaside in December.
