Tennessee man charged in shooting death involving young brothers

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Tennessee authorities say a man failed to secure a gun used in the death of a 14-year-old who was shot by his younger brother.

The Shelby County district attorney's office says 20-year-old Tyree Washington has been arrested on charges of criminally negligent homicide and child neglect involving serious bodily injury.

Investigators said Washington's teen cousin was shot in the head by the boy's 6-year-old brother on May 25. Authorities say the 6-year-old found a 9mm handgun that Washington kept in a drawer in the bedroom where the boys slept.

Washington was indicted in August and arrested Oct. 16. He is out of jail on bond. Online court records do not show whether he has a lawyer to speak on his behalf.

An arraignment is set for Oct. 30.
