KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Target on Saturday acknowledged guests were “unable to make purchases” at its stores, as shoppers took to social media to complain that cash registers weren’t working for a couple hours.

In a tweet from one of its official accounts just after 2 p.m., Target said that it’s “aware of a systems issue in store and are working as quickly as possible to get this fixed.”

Just after 5 p.m. the company said registers were fully back online and customers are able to purchase merchandise again in all stores.

Target said the outage was the result of an internal technology issue that lasted for approximately two hours.

“Our technology team worked quickly to identify and fix the issue, and we apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this caused for our guests. After an initial but thorough review, we can confirm that this was not a data breach or security-related issue, and no guest information was compromised at any time. We appreciate all of our store team members who worked quickly to assist guests and thank everyone involved for their patience,” the company said in a statement.

The systems issue came on a busy weekend for shoppers ahead of Father’s Day on Sunday.

It’s not clear how many Target stores were affected or what caused the outage. The company’s corporate office did not immediately respond to requests for details about the issue.

Target has 1,800 locations in the United States and a presence in India.

Social media users reported cash registers were not functioning properly at dozens of stores across the country and posted images of long lines.
