COLUMBUS, Ind. — A young woman is killed in a hit-and-run crash in Columbus. Now police are searching for the driver who refused to stop.
Investigators say 21-year-old Kyla Ortlieb was riding her bike Sunday night when a vehicle hit her.
CPD said around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night, officers were sent to the area of 11th Street and Chestnut Street after multiple 911 calls reporting a crash.
“It’s so horrific somebody could do such a thing and drive away,” said neighbor Rita Gabriel.
Several neighbors like Rita say Ortlieb lived in an apartment less than a block away from where she died and always rode her bike to and from work.
“She was a pretty young girl, a beautiful young girl. To have this happen to her it makes me want to throw up,” said Gabriel.
“It’s unbelievable really. I don’t understand how you could just leave,” said Timothy Dunham.
Dunham rides his bike on Chestnut every day and says the crash makes him concerned about his safety.
“Being an avid bike rider it worries me. I’m on it every day so my risk is higher,” said Dunham.
“It’s just sad that a 21-year-old young lady has died,” said Columbus police Lt. Matt Harris.
While police found the suspect’s GMC Jimmy abandoned with significant front end damage less than a quarter mile away near 12th and Union, the suspect had apparently run away.
Officers now hope the driver either turns them self in or the public helps them make an arrest.
“You know at this point there’s nothing to believe it’s intentional. Accidents happen and if that’s the case then come forward,” said Harris.
