Update: Metro responds to Primrose East sewage leak complaint

Metro claims Primrose East sewage leak has not been a problem for five years, but rather that the pipeline only recently failed.

Primrose East resident Margaret Azera Cunningham-Werrett and her family are forced to stay indoors as raw sewage flows through their property from an ongoing sewage leak.

The main source of the leak is a manhole found right behind the family’s Quince Street home.

Margaret recently told the GCN that this problem has been ongoing for five years, but the metro disputes this.

“The statement that this leak has been ongoing for five years is incorrect, the pipe failed recently,” said Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, divisional head for the metro’s communication and media relations.

As for the cause of the leak, Cebekhulu stated the pipeline was filled with rocks which were difficult to clear.

“Technicians had to excavate in order to gain access to the line and remove the foreign objects,” Cebekhulu said.

“Due to depth of excavation and collapsible soil material it took technicians a long time to complete the work.

“The pipe repairs were completed and the effluent contained in the line removed.

“The metro further cleaned and disinfected the sewer overflows at the affected properties.”

Margaret claimed the metro had not communicated effectively with her during the process, but the metro claimed they communicated with the affected parties constantly.
