2 North Iowa nurses on the list of 100 Great Iowa Nurses
Two North Iowa nurses – Michelle Kingland and Douglas Meyers – are among the honorees in the 100 Great Iowa Nurses program, according to a release.
They were selected "based on their concern for humanity, their contribution to the community and to the nursing profession, their leadership and mentoring." A banquet is scheduled for May 6 in Des Moines.
Kingland works at Hospice of North Iowa in Forest City, while Meyers works for Mercy Medical Center–North Iowa in Clear Lake.
3 from First Citizens complete Lending School
Dalton Hamm, Sara Kriener, and Tiffany Nonnweiler of First Citizens Bank successfully completed the Iowa Bankers Association’s Commercial Lending School held in October in Ankeny. The one-week training program included macroeconomics, business structures, management analysis, analytics, and banking roles.
Hamm, a credit analyst at the west Mason City office, joined First Citizens Bank in 2016. He graduated from Iowa State.
Kriener, also a credit analyst at the west Mason City office, joined First Citizens Bank in 2015. She, graduate of Northern Iowa, was also elected to the advisory board of IBA’s Commercial Lending School.
Nonnweiler, AVP lending officer at the west Mason City office, joined First Citizens Bank in 2009. She graduated from Northern Iowa.
3 North Iowa farms recognized by AgVantage
Three North Iowa farms were recognized by Waverly-based AgVantage FS for implementing sustainable nutrient management practices. The firm recognized 26 Iowa farms "who have adopted practices that optimize nutrient utilization, leading to positive long-term soil and water quality, while enhancing return on investment." The local winners include: Dennis Brinkman, Greene; Wayne and Lisa Koehler, Charles City; and Marvin and Carolyn Oleson, Latimer.
11 North Iowa projects receive Paint Iowa Beautiful grants
Eleven North Iowa projects received grants from the Paint Iowa Beautiful program through Diamond Vogel Paint and Keep Iowa Beautiful. The program provides free paint to public service projects. Among the recipients and projects:
City of Algona, State Street alley; Belmond Community Apartments, exteriors; Clarion Pride Committee, home paint and clean up; Heartland Museum gift shop and schoolhouse in Clarion; Winnebago Historical Society in Forest City, school belfrey/railroad work shed and blacksmith shop/general store; City of Garner Visioning Committee, retail building; Franklin County Fair, Pleasant Hill Village buildings in Hampton; Lake Mills Community Preschool/Daycare Center; Riceville Community Foundation, farmers market shed; and Grow Rockford Together, city street trail "sharrows."
ABCM facilities make Best Nursing Homes list
Hampton-based ABCM Corporation, a long-term care provider, had 16 of its Iowa homes named to the U.S. News and World Report’s Best Nursing Homes in Iowa list for 2018. The ABCM Corporation homes in North Iowa with the "Top Performing" rating included: Concord Care Center of Garner, Dumont Wellness Center, Rehabilitation Center of Allison, Rehabilitation Center of Belmond, Rehabilitation Center of Hampton, and Westview Care Center of Britt.
The magazine rated 439 facilities in Iowa; 80 received the highest rating. Ratings were calculated using an average of several monthly federal quality and performance reports.
Access named to Top Workplaces list
WAUKEE-based Access Systems, with an office in Mason City, was named second in the mid-sized company category for Top Workplaces in Iowa for 2018 by the Des Moines Register. Access was also named a Top Iowa Workplace for the fourth straight year, and CEO Shane Sloan was named a Top Leader.

Access Systems, with a branch office in Mason City, was named to CNR's 2018 Solution Provider 500 list. The honor recognizes the top "technology integrators, solution providers and IT consultants in North America by revenue."
Accord Architecture wins AIA award
The Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare project designed by Accord Architecture and built by Henkel Construction received the American Institute of Architects 2018 People’s Choice Award, according to a release. Accord Architecture is a wholly owned subsidiary of Henkel Construction Company. Both companies have offices in Mason City and Ames.

Mason City- and Ames-based Accord Architecture, a subsidiary of Henkel Construction, was awarded the People’s Choice Award by the Masonry Institute of Iowa for its architectural design of Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Health Care in Mason City.
Ag Ventures' project claims pitch contest
A project initially funded by Mason City-based Ag Ventures Alliance won the AgLaunch Startup Station Pitch Contest March 2 in Memphis. Rantizo is a targeted drone sprayer company focused on agriculture. The win results in a spot at the 2018 Farm Journal AgTech Expo in Indianapolis.
Air Choice One donates to Crisis Intervention
Air Choice One presented a $1,000 check to Mason City-based Crisis Intervention Services on Thursday. The nonprofit, which provides domestic abuse and sexual assault services in 15 North Iowa counties, won an online contest through Air Choice to pick the favorite charity in the market. Other nonprofits on the ballot included: Humane Society of Northern Iowa, NIVC Services, Inc., and Habitat for Humanity.
Alliant Energy Foundation awards grants
Five North Iowa nonprofit organizations recently received community grants from the Alliant Energy Foundation.
Clear Lake Community School District received $2,500 for "STEM/PLTW launch," and North Iowa Area Community College Foundation received $2,000 for "NIACC and Next Generation Science Standards: What's Next in Science for North Iowa." Smaller grants were awarded to: West Hancock Community Schools, Britt; Newman Catholic School, Mason City; and the Town of Scarville.
Atlas honors Just Roof It
Just Roof IT owner Randy Rodriguez, based in Mason City, was awarded the Silver Level Certificate of Achievement by Atlas Roofing Corporation. Just Roof It installed the required number of jobs with Atlas Shingles.
Baldus, Osage restaurant recognized by Iowa trade group
Jessica Baldus will receive the Small Community Restaurant Neighbor Philanthropist award for Unc's Cheescakes in Osage from the Iowa Restaurant Association. Awards from the group will be presented at a banquet Oct. 8 in Des Moines. Restaurants were nominated by industry members and the public, and winners were selected by industry leaders, according to a release.
Bills recognized by KHI Solutions
Rhonda Bills of Long Term Care Strategies was recently recognized by KHI Solutions with the 2017 Partners in Excellence Grow Your Business Award. The award is presented to the top 10 percent of KHI agents based on 2017 sales production. They were recognized at a reception in early March.
Bjorklund receives award from CDC
Bethany Bjorklund, immunization nurse with the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health, was named the of the 2018 Childhood Immunization Champion Award for Iowa by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The award recognizes individuals who make a significant contribution toward improving public health through their work in childhood immunization.
Bjorklund's efforts contributed to Cerro Gordo County ranking first in the state of Iowa for childhood vaccination rates in 2016, with more than 87 percent of 2-year-olds up-to-date on their immunizations.
Braun, Forsyth, and Rush named to President’s Club
Three employees at First Citizens Bank were recently named to the Iowa Mortgage Association’s President’s Club for their 2017 efforts as home loan originators: Dawn Marie Braun, vice president and private banking in Mason City; Kelsey Forsyth, real estate lending officer in Charles City; and Kelly Rush, vice president and real estate lending officer in Mason City.
The awards, recognizing 130 closed loans or loans in excess of $20 million, were given at the recent IMA Spring Conference in Cedar Rapids.
Cargill names Stakeholders of the Year
Cargill announced two Safety Stakeholders of the Year – John Gore and Scott Halsne – for demonstrating leadership and accountability. They were recognized at a recent company-wide safety celebration.
Century 21 Preferred receives awards for 2017
CENTURY 21 Preferred was awarded the Quality Service Pinnacle Award for 2017 by Century 21 Real Estate LLC. To earn the award, an office must receive completed customer surveys with an average survey score of at least 95 percent or better for two consecutive years.
The office also received the President’s Award. The annual award recognizes those offices that earn the Century 21 Centurion and Quality Service Pinnacle awards in the same calendar year. The Centurium Award is presented to offices that achieve or surpass sales production of 472 closed transaction sides within a calendar year.
The full-service office is located in Mason City, with branch offices in Clear Lake and Northwood. The 19 real estate agents are managed by Broker/Owner Dodie Wilkins.
Charles City boutique earns small business award
America’s SBDC Iowa named Mara Bridal & Special Occasion Boutique of Charles City the winner of the SBDC’s statewide Business of the Month Award. Mara Bridal & Special Occasion Boutique opened in November 2017 and is owned by Tiffany Rottinghaus. The store offers gowns and formal wear, and has two full-time and three part-time employees.
CLB&T receives performance award
Clear Lake-based CLB&T Insurance and Financial Services received the Star Award for exceptional performance on behalf of North Star Mutual Insurance in 2017. Six Iowa agencies received the honor, which recognizes production.
Clear Lake Bank & Trust lenders win awards
Clear Lake Bank & Trust announced the recognition of two lenders – Cheryl Kurtzleben and Casey Purcell – from the Iowa Mortgage Association for loan volume in 2017.
Kurtzleben, vice president of real estate lending, was named to the group's President’s Circle. Purcell, mortgage lending officer, was named Winner’s Circle.
Clear Lake Bank & Trust makes list for eighth straight year
Clear Lake Bank & Trust was named a 2018 Top Workplaces honor by The Des Moines Register for the eighth consecutive year. The bank is one of only seven companies across the state of Iowa to have received the award since the award’s inception, according to a release.
The awards are based on anonymous employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by a research partner. The survey measures several aspects of workplace culture.
Clear Lake Chamber presents annual awards, new officers and board members
The Clear Lake Area Chamber recently held its 75th annual awards presentation and announced new board members and officers.
New board members include: Natalie Plagge, Clear Lake Bank & Trust; Kent Thoe, MBT Bank; Sarah Nielsen, First Citizens Bank; and Michael Knorr, Accord Architecture.

Community Kitchen recognizes volunteer, names board
Wally Reidel, Mason City, was recognized as the 2017 Community Kitchen Volunteer of the Year during the nonprofit's annual meeting. Reidel is a "faithful" who helps with the Kitchen’s meal preparation program, which served more than 54,100 meals in 2017.
Community Kitchen also announced its board members for 2018: Jessica Reith, president; Jan Faktor, vice president; Megan Studer, secretary-treasurer; and board members Linda Brunsvold, Rev. Kenneth Gehling, Lucy Tanner, Michelle Jurgens, Doug Waychus, and Jean Palmer (past president). Amanda Ragan remains executive director.
Concrete Paving Association honors Henkel project
The Iowa Concrete Paving Association recently recognized Henkel Construction Company for its role in the construction of the Waukee Transportation and Operations Facility parking lot paving project. The project was rated the best Parking Lot PCC Paving Project (projects greater than 15,000 square yards) in the state of Iowa in 2017. Henkel partnered with Absolute Concrete on the project.
Cornelius receives ACP designation
Mason City-based First Citizens Trust & Investment Services announced that Roberta Cornelius, vice president and trust officer, completed the Advanced Paralegal Certification course on estate planning and is now considered an Advanced Certified Paralegal, or ACP. Cornelius has over 30 years of trust experience.
Country Meadow named Property of the Year
Mason City's Country Meadow Place was named Property of the Year by the Iowa Assisted Living Association at its annual conference Aug. 23 in Des Moines. The award recognizes "outstanding performance including consistently high occupancy, innovative renovations or remodeling, special events, awards received and tenant comments," according to a release.
Curriers, Got You Covered recognized as Entrepreneur of the Month
The NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and the North Iowa Area SBDC named Deb and John Currier of Got You Covered as the Entrepreneur of the Month for October 2018. Founded in 2003 in Butler County as a part-time business, Got You Covered quickly expanded to Hampton, and the couple began working with NIACC in 2005. The business offers printed and embroidered clothing, athletic uniforms and fan wear, gifts, and personalized promotional products.
D & S celebrates 18 years
Mason City-based D & S Services is entering its 18th year in business, according to a release. The company began as a tax preparation service provider and does accounting, payroll, representation and tax debt resolution provider for individuals and businesses.
Dean Snyder Construction receives Best of Des Moines award
Clear Lake-based Dean Snyder Construction received the Best of Des Moines General Contractor runner-up honor from the Business Record based on more than 5,000 votes by the publication's readers. The firm received the award for the second consecutive year.
Dean Snyder's DeFord named top Safety Professional
Dean Snyder Construction’s Field Safety Coordinator Russ DeFord was named the Safety Professional of the Year. He received the award Feb. 28 at the annual Master Builders of Iowa winter conference.
DeFord has been with Clear Lake-based DSC since 1993 and has been the field safety coordinator since 2008.
Dean Snyder Construction was also recognized as a finalist for the Leadership in Workforce Recruitment award at the conference.
Dettmer receives excellence award
Dr. Timothy M. Dettmer received Mason City Clinic’s 2018 MacGregor Award for Excellence. The award recognizes a Clinic "physician who, in the opinion of his colleagues, goes above and beyond in service to patients, colleagues, and the community." Dettmer, an otolaryngologist, was raised in Mason City and Spencer. He earned his medical degree from Iowa and completed his residency in Iowa City. Dettmer has been with Mason City Clinic since 2005; he and his wife have five children.
Doug's earns Toro award for 2017
Garner's Doug's Small Engine Sales & Service earned the President's Club award for 2017 from Toro. The award recognizes outstanding sales of the line's residential lawn and landscape contractor equipment.
Elderbridge, board member receive volunteer awards
Elderbridge Agency on Aging and Elderbridge Alliance board member Steve Kruse received Governor's Volunteer Awards from Gov. Kim Reynolds on June 21 in Cedar Falls.
The agency nominated by officials with the State of Iowa Senior Health Insurance Information Program, or SHIIP, for sponsoring the SHIIP program in Mason City for the past 10 years. Trained volunteer counselors help seniors make informed decisions about their Medicare coverage options and benefits.
Kruse was recognized for assisting with the Alliance's formation and expansion.
Ewing earns funeral service certification
Michael Ewing, with the Clarion home of Ewing Funeral Home and Monument Company, received the Certified Funeral Services Practitioner designation from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice at a gathering in Springfield, Missouri. The certification, held by 18 directors in Iowa, includes training, education, professional, and community requirements.
Family Connections receives Iowa credential
The Iowa Department of Management and Public Health announced the Family Connections of Cerro Gordo, Hancock, and Worth Counties earned the Iowa Family Support Credential. The award recognizes family support and parent education programs that are validated through an external evaluation and are in adherence to the Iowa Family Support Standards.
Family Connections includes a team of nurses, social workers and early childhood educators who offer resources and programs for pregnant and parenting families in North Iowa.
First Security employees complete ag credt school
First Security Bank & Trust employees Kris Wegner, Sydney Franzen, Josh Dodd, and Eric Miller recently completed the 2018 Ag Credit School in Ames. The program includes coursework, case studies, computer applications, and personal instruction covering credit management, financing new credits, risk management, and profitability strategies.
Wegner, a graduate of Northern Iowa, joined First Security in Charles City in June 2016 as an ag/commercial lender. He also owns and operates his own farm near Charles City.
Franzen, a Rockford native and graduate of NIACC and Northern Iowa, joined First Security in 2014 and was promoted to lender in 2016. She lives in Nashua with her husband and daughter.
Dodd, AVP ag/commercial lender, joined First Security in Manly in June 2016. He previously worked for Wells Fargo in Des Moines and for 16 years in sales. Dodd grew up in Northwood and graduated from Wartburg and Capella. He lives in Osage with his wife and four children.

Francis Lauer celebrates 50 years in North Iowa
Francis Lauer will celebrate 50 years of serving North Iowa on Thursday, Sept. 20. The celebration runs 4 to 6 p.m. at 50 N. Eisenhower Ave., with a program at 5 p.m. There will be a bouncy house, activity stations and cake.
Fullerton honored by funeral directors group
James M. Fullerton, of Mason City, was one of nine funeral directors recognized for 40 years in the business during the 138th Annual Iowa Funeral Directors Association Convention, May 15-17, in Altoona.
Fullerton graduated from Minnesota with a degree in mortuary science and worked at funeral homes in Mason City and Minnesota. In 1986, he purchased the Patterson James Funeral Home in Mason City and Rockwell. He later added Hage Funeral Home in Charles City and Schumburg Funeral Home in Rockford.
Gooch presents at group's conference
Dr. Charlene Gooch presented "Retirement: Rigors, Realities, Rewards" at the The International Association of Employee Assistance Professionals in Education's annual conference Oct. 8-10 in Minneapolis. The association is a group of employee assistance professionals who work in educational settings.

Greder named chairman of state board
Fred Greder with Benchmark Agribusiness of Mason City was elected chairman of the Real Estate Appraiser Examining Board at the May 2018 state board meeting. Greder has been serving on the board since November 2012. He was appointed to the board by then-Gov. Terry Branstad.
Groups recognize diversity work at Mediacom
West Des Moines-based Mediacom Communications earned high rankings within the cable and telecommunications industry as one of the top companies for women to work by Women in Cable Communications, and as a top employer for people of color by Multi-Ethnicity in Communications.

Hassebroek earns national certification
Stephanie Hassebroek, trust officer with Clear Lake Bank & Trust, earned the Certified Trust & Financial Advisor professional certification from the American Bankers Association. The award recognizes experience, education, assessment and ethics. A native of Newton and University of Iowa graduate, Hassebroek joined CLBT in 2011 and was promoted in 2017.
Health for Life awards two grants to Plymouth projects
The HEALTH For Life Board, in partnership with the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health, awarded funding for two wellness initiatives in Plymouth. The Plymouth Parks and Recreation Department was awarded $3,510 to develop a community disk golf course. The Plymouth Fitness Class was awarded $295 to purchase new fitness equipment.

Henkel receives top Workforce Recruitment Award
Henkel Construction Company was named the 2017 recipient of the Leadership in Workforce Recruitment Award by the Master Builders of Iowa at the group's annual conference Feb. 28 in Altoona.
The award recognizes "the outstanding efforts of companies who are actively engaged in solving our industry’s labor shortage" by "communicating to future industry workers that there are incredible career opportunities in the commercial construction industry."
Henrich completes recertification
Dr. Edward S. Henrich, a podiatrist with Mason City Clinic, recently become board recertified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery after passing the examination. Henrich has been practicing for 28 years and is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He received his medical degree from Des Moines University.
Hepperly earns Century 21 award
Jon Hepperly, realtor associate with CENTURY 21 Preferred, was awarded with the CENTURY 21 System's Quality Service Producer Award for 2017. The award is given to members who receive a minimum return rate of 30 percent on post-transaction surveys and a minimum index of 90 percent.

Local CPA firm Hogan-Hansen, P.C., was awarded the 2017 Firm of the Year award and the 2017 Top Wealth Advisory Firm from HK Financial Services.
Holiday Inn Lodge earns Best Western honor
The Best Western Holiday Lodge in Clear Lake received the company's Director's Award. The honor recognizes hotels scoring in the top 20 percent in quality assurance scores and also requires minimum standards for design and customer service.
IMT Group Names MBT Insurance Gem Agency
The IMT Group, a Midwest-based provider of personal and commercial insurance products, recently named Forest City-based MBT Insurance to its list of 2018 Gem Agencies. MBT was one of 84 agencies out of about 1,000 in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin to receive the award, which is based on rank, growth, loss ratio, and profitability.
Iowa Auto Dealers give grant to NIACC
The Iowa Automobile Dealers Foundation for Education awarded $5,100 to North Iowa Area Community College to further automotive education, according to a release. The grant will be used to purchase a battery kit for the auto tech and diesel tech programs.
Iowa Democrats present award to Lytle
Tahmyrah Lytle, Mason City, received the Edward Campbell Rising Star Award at the Iowa Democratic Party Hall of Fame dinner on Saturday in Altoona. The award recognizes Lytle's "outstanding dedication to the Democratic Party and her promising future as a Party supporter." She is currently the youth coordinator and social media manager with the Cerro Gordo County Democrats.
Iowa Museum Association awards certificates
The Iowa Museum Association has awarded certificates to four Mason City residents: Joyce Deike, Wright on the Park & Stockman House; Kay Ingersoll, Kinney Pioneer Museum; Tara Schlichting, Wright on the Park and Lindsey James, Visit Mason City. Each received a certificate for completion of a series of five workshops on core museum industry topics.
Iowa State Bar recognizes Berry
Clear Lake attorney Matt Berry was named the August recipient of the Spotlight on Service award from the Iowa State Bar Association. The award recognizes "work in the community." Berry, married to Jean and practicing law since 1981, has served as an ordained deacon to Catholic parishes in Mason City and Manly. He has also volunteered and served on boards with the Clear Lake Economic Development Corporation, Community Kitchen and One Vision.
James graduates from Iowa Tourism Leadership Institute
Lindsey James, executive director of Visit Mason City, graduated from the Iowa Tourism Leadership Institute, which was held April 12-13 in Cedar Rapids. The institute provides Iowa tourism professionals an opportunity to expand their leadership knowledge and skills.
Joseph Company receives top award from Hormel Foods
The Joseph Company of Austin and Albert Lea, Minnesota was recognized by Hormel Foods Corporation on May 4 for winning the company’s 2017 Spirit of Excellence Award for Construction Services. The award recognizes quality and performance standards among Hormel vendors.

Krabbe completes Franklin training

Lake Time Brewery earns Pappajohn monthly award
The NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and North Iowa Area SBDC named Bob Rolling of Lake Time Brewery as the Entrepreneur of the Month for June 2018. Lake Time Brewery was founded by Bob and Suzy Rolling in 2012. In addition to a downtown Clear Lake location, Lake Time is available in 23 North Iowa counties and eight more in the Des Moines/Ames area.
Lake Time Brewery wins SBDC award
America’s SBDC Iowa announced that Lake Time Brewery in Clear Lake, is the winner of the group's August Business of the Month award. Lake Time Brewery was founded by Bob and Suzy Rolling in 2012. In addition to a downtown Clear Lake location, Lake Time is available in 23 North Iowa counties and eight more in the Des Moines/Ames area.
Learning Connection earns state credential
The Iowa Department of Management and Public Health announced that the Learning Connection programs of Mitchell and Floyd counties earned the Iowa Family Support Credential. The designation is awarded to family support and parent education programs "that are validated through an external evaluation to be in substantial adherence to the Iowa Family Support Standards."
Lee completes ABO recertification
Dr. Phillip Lee, a Mason City Clinic otolaryngologist, recently completed the recertification process of the American Board of Otolaryngology, advanced experience in sleep medicine, after passing the examination. Lee joined Mason City Clinic in July 1986. He graduated from Iowa, completed internships and residencies in LaCrosse and Iowa City, and is a member of five medical societies or academies.
Lemmon wins Ford challenge
Nate Lemmon, sales consultant with Pritchard Family Auto Sales, completed six missions and 12 objectives over Ford's three-month sales staff challenge based on the EcoSport. Lemmon finished with a perfect score among more than 2,600 participants and received a check.
Lichtsinn named top dealer in Iowa
Forest City-based Lichtsinn RV ws named by the top motorhome dealer in Iowa for 2017 by Statistical Surveys, Inc., a nationwide retail reporting service. The dealership won the award for the 16th consecutive year.
Live Love Yoga celebrates five years
Live Love Yoga, located in downtown Mason City, celebrated its fifth anniversary on Sept. 8 with an open house. The event featured chair massages, a henna artist from Des Moines, body art and refreshments.
LSI receives $10,000 grant from Barkema Charitable Trust
Mason City's Lutheran Services in Iowa recently received $10,000 from the Foster and Evelyn Barkema Charitable Trust. The grant will support LSI’s Early Childhood Services New Parent Program, which provides in-home parenting education for families in Cerro Gordo County.
Luis Garcia, Mr. Taco recognized as Entrepreneur of the Month
The NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and the North Iowa Area SBDC named Luis Garcia of Mr. Taco as the Entrepreneur of the Month for August 2018. He founded Mr. Taco in 2011 and expanded into Southbridge Mall in February 2016. He's added Mr. Churro and Sub Marine Soups & Sandwich Shop, also at Southbridge.
Main Street Iowa honors Krull
Allyson Krull, marketing and leadership development director with the Mason City Chamber of Commerce, received the Leadership Award for outstanding efforts to make a positive impact on the local Main Street community from Main Street Iowa. The award was presented at the group's 32nd annual award celebration April 13 in Des Moines.
Krull was instrumental in the “Mason City Says YES campaign” along with the group of North Iowa Leadership students also led by Krull, a Mason City Chamber program.

Manly Specialty Care receives quality award
Manly Specialty Care received the 2018 Bronze – Commitment to Quality Award for its dedication to improving the lives of residents through quality care, according to a release. The award is presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living, and honors centers that have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality care for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
Mason City All Risk, IMT award $250 to My Happy Place
Mason City's My Happy Place received one of 58 $250 checks from IMT Insurance for the firm's Community Contest. My Happy Place will use the funds for renovations in the children's room, and it was nominated for the award by Mason City All Risk Insurance.
Mason City attorney named one of Iowa's best
Mason City attorney Sarah Reindl was named one of Iowa's top 10 criminal defense attorneys by the National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys. The four-step selection process includes nominations, professional recognition and a review by an NACDA board.
Mason City Chamber receives Public Policy Award
The Mason City Chamber of Commerce received the the recipient of the Public Policy of the Year award from the Mid-America Chamber Executives for the second consecutive year. The award was presented at the group's recent conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and recognized chamber executives in six states.

Mason City grad earns awards from AAFS
Dr. Andrew Baker, chief medical examiner for Minnesota's Hennepin County, received two awards - the Milton Helpern Award and the Kenneth S. Field Award of Appreciation - for lifetime achievement in forensic pathology and for contributions to the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Baker is a 1985 graduate of Mason City High School and the son of Mick and the late Sally Baker.
Mason City Sleep Center receives accreditation
Mason City Sleep Center was awarded a three-year accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, recognizing "comprehensive, excellent patient care," according to a release.
Mason City's native's novel earns award
"The Passion of Marta" – written by Mason City native Caren Umbarger – was selected as a 2017 Nautilus Silver Award Winner. The Nautilus awards recognize book that "that nurture positive change to co-create a better world." This is Umbarger's second self-published novel after "The Passion of Marta," which was a finalist for a 2017 Chanticleer Goethe Award. Umbarger lives in St. Augustine, Florida with her husband.
Mason City, Cerro Gordo Health win HSI awards
Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative named Mason City a Healthy Hometown and also honored Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health as its recipient of the Small Workplace Award. The recognition was part of the initiative's inaugural awards recognizing efforts "to improve the physical, social and emotional well-being of Iowans."
McCaulley named 2018 Mercy Legend
Mercy Medical Center-North announced Barbara McCaulley, vice president of mission integration, as the recipient of the 2018 Mercy Legend Award.
McCaulley's nomination recognized her dedication as a role model, mentor, educator, confidant and friend.

McDonald’s names Cargill 'U.S. Supplier of the Year'
McDonald’s USA presented Cargill Protein’s Egg Team with the 2017 U.S. Supplier of the Year award June 1 at its Mason City and Lake Odessa, Michigan egg processing facilities. Cargill was selected "for its leadership in supporting the launch and execution of McDonald’s 'All Day Breakfast,' and pledging to supply 100 percent cage-free eggs for dedicated supply by 2025," according to a release. Cargill supplies McDonald's more than 2 billion eggs every year.
McIntire earns banking certificate
Jillian McIntire, head of retail sales at NSB Bank in Mason City, successfully completed the Iowa School of Banking held June 10-15 i Coralville. The course, offered by the Iowa Bankers Association, includes banking functions, operations and financial management. McIntire joined NSB in 2009 and lives in Clear Lake with her husband and four children.
Meany recognized for 20 years of service
Brian Meany, owner of Mason City-based ag consultant and sales firm Meany Ag LLC, was recognized for 20 years of service as a certified crop adviser by the American Society of Agronomy. Meany has been in ag sales for more than 20 years.
Mercy Breast Center receives certification
Mercy Breast Center of North Iowa was recognized for the fourth consecutive year as a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program. The recertification process recognizes "commitment to provide quality breast health care to patients in its community" in quality and cost-control measures.

The Gold Seal and the Heart-Check mark represent symbols of quality from their respective organizations, according to a release. Mason City-based Mid-West Roofing Company is entering its 121st year in business. The company began as a wholesaler of brick and insulation for North Iowa contractors. Today, it's a commercial and industrial roofing contractor specializing in replacement, restoration, maintenance and leak repair.
Moormans earn Entrepreneurs of the Month award
The NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and the North Iowa Area SBDC named Scott and Susan Moorman of Moorman Clothiers as the Entrepreneur of the Month for November 2018. The couple purchased Quinn's Clothing in 1993; added a women's line to the store in 1997; added a location in Ames catering to Iowa State fans; and moved to its current location in 2009 to make way for the renovation and reopening of the Historic Park Inn.
Neuberger earns IVMA scholarship
Clear Lake native Dr. Holly Neuberger was recently awarded one of nine Iowa Veterinary Medical Association sustaining involvement scholarships. The award recognizes community involvement, organized veterinary medicine leadership, practice in Iowa and Iowa residency. Neuberger earned degrees from Northern Iowa and Iowa State. She will begin her career practicing small animal medicine at Mason City Pet Clinic.

North Iowa Area Community College was named the No. 2 licensed practice nursing program in Iowa by PracticalNursing.org. The group ranks 11 of the the state's schools using first-time pass rates on the NCLEX-PN exam.

NIVC earns three-year accreditation
Mason City's NIVC Services, Inc. recently received accreditation for six services related to employment, integration, development, and supported and transition living from CARF International. The designation runs through Dec. 31, 2020. According to a release, CARF is an independent nonprofit that uses a review process "that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served."
NIVC Services named a Top Workplaces in Iowa
NIVC Services, Inc. was awarded a 2018 Top Workplaces honor by The Des Moines Register, ranking 13th in top 75 small businesses. The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by research partner Energage, LLC,, a leading provider of technology-based employee engagement tools. Nurse.org survey recognizes Mercy-North Iowa
Nurse.org recognized Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa as one of the top hospitals for nurses to work for in Iowa, according to a release. The rating is based on workplace satisfaction surveys by nurses at 314 Iowa facilities.
One Vision receives accreditation

Clear Lake-based One Vision recently received a three-year accreditation from Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, or CARF, following a three-day onsite visit in October. The review included a look at programs, services, employment, policies and procedures. The evaluation highlighted One Vision's "dedication, compassion, and enthusiasm for the services they provide," according to a release. One Vision, which provides personal and employment supports for individuals with disabilities in 30 Iowa communities, has been accredited by CARF since the 1980s.

Physician assistant group honors Mason City PA
Jay M. Thomas was recognized as the Iowa Physician Assistant of the Year by the Iowa Physician Assistant Society at the group's fall medical education conference. He was recognized for his patient care and for educating medical professionals. Thomas received a similar award from the American Academy of Physician Assistants earlier this year.

RSVP volunteers honored for service
North Iowa volunteers were honored for service during RSVP’s annual Volunteer Celebration on June 7. The 338 volunteers combined for 6,280 hours of time toward school programs, emergency preparedness, the Red Cross and more. Schmidt elected to executive board
Tim Schmidt, Garner city council member, was elected to serve on the executive board of the Iowa League of Cities during the group's annual conference Sept. 14 in Council Bluffs. Schmidt was first elected to the Garner City Council in November 2013. He also serves on the North Iowa Area Council of Governments.
Schmitt selected for national program
Emily Schmitt, general counsel for Sheffield-based Sukup Manufacturing Co., was selected for the National Association of Manufacturers' Manufacturing Executive Leadership Program.

Staci Ackerson, Shankland Insurance recognized as Entrepreneur of the Month
The NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and the North Iowa Area SBDC named Staci Ackerson of Shankland Insurance as the Entrepreneur of the Month for September 2018. Using state grants, she moved the business from downtown Charles City to the derelict Western Railroad depot. The renovation included adding two rental apartments and maintaining the historical charm of the building.
Stearns earns Century 21 awards
Ray Stearns, Realtor associate with CENTURY 21 Preferred, earned the CENTURY 21 System's Emerald Award for sales production in 2017. The award is given to associates who have 46 closed transaction sides within a calendar year.
Stearns also received the Quality Service Pinnacle Producer Award, which is based on customer satisfaction survey results.
Steckman receives Iowa Child Advocate Award
Rep. Sharon Steckman (D-Mason City) was selected as the 2018 Iowa Child Advocate Award recipient by Prevent Child Abuse Iowa. The award recognizes her advocacy for preventing child abuse and supporting policies and programs to better protect children and families.
Stephen receives distinguished service award
Shirley Stephen, chronic disease prevention nurse with the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health, received the 2018 Henry Albert Memorial Award from the Iowa Public Health Association. The award recognizes distinguished leadership in public health, according to a release.
Stephen has been an employee of the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health for 19 years. Her work includes operating the Senior Health Clinics, which are free for all Cerro Gordo County residents age 55 and older.
Stover Ventures wins $1,000 in entrepreneurial competition
Stover Ventures, LLC of Osage has received a $1,000 finalist award from the John Pappajohn Iowa Entrepreneurial Venture Competition. The company is applying a patented process to corn stover to extract highly effective antioxidants while creating a more digestible animal feed. They plan to open their first production facility in Osage.
Sukup inducted into National Academy of Engineering
Charles Sukup, president of Sukup Manufacturing Co., was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in a ceremony Sept. 30 in Washington, D.C.
He is one of 83 new members and 16 foreign members elected Feb. 7 into NAE, which has 2,293 members.
Election into the NAE is considered the highest professional distinction accorded an engineer.
Sukup Manufacturing receives Workplace Wellness Diamond Award
Sukup Manufacturing Co. has been awarded Cerro Gordo County Department of Public's Health third annual Workplace Wellness Diamond Award for its support of employee health and well-being. The Workplace Wellness Awards Program is a partnership between the department, Mason City Chamber of Commerce and the Healthy-Mason City Worksite Committee. Henkel Construction was awarded the Silver Level, and the Mason City Chamber of Commerce received the Bronze Level.

Sheffield-based Sukup Manufacturing Co. held its sexennial trip to Hawaii in January for employees who completed their 10th year of employment with the company. This year's trip, the 12th offered by Sukup, included 162 workers and spouses.
TeamQuest Foundation awards three STEM grants
The TeamQuest Foundation recently announced its three grant recipients to support STEM programs in North Iowa: Project Lead the Way launch at Clear Creek Elementary School and Robotics Club ($14,250); Mason City Schools Robotics Club ($1,450); and NIACC's YES! Science Camp ($4,400). Applications for 2018 awards are due April 30.
Theobald earns recognition from Iowa Finance Authority
The Iowa Finance Authority recently announced that 40 lenders and Realtors have earned the group's 2018 Preferred Partner designation. Amber Theobald of US Bank in Mason City is among them. IFA says group members are "experts for Iowa home buyers seeking assistance with the homeownership process and are expertly trained in IFA mortgage and down payment assistance programs," according to a release.
Thoma earns board certification
Dr. Trisha Thoma, a Mason City Clinic otolaryngologist, has recently become a certified diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology. Thoma received her medical doctorate from Iowa and completed a residency in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Tott earns PTOE certification
Eric Tott, a licensed engineer with Mason City-based WHKS & Co., has become certified as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer. Tott joined WHKS in 2007 and has managed and designed numerous roadway, traffic and infrastructure projects.
Trade group honors former One Vision CEO
The ANCOR Foundation inducted former One Vision CEO John Severtson into its Legacy Leaders Circle at its annual meeting April 17 in Alexandria, Virginia. The award honors long-time members who made significant contributions to the group, which includes more than 1,400 intellectual and developmental disability providers. Severtson served as CEO of One Vision, formerly Opportunity Village, from 2002 to 2014.

Two from North Iowa complete Leadership Iowa
Two North Iowans – Ian Stockberg with Good Shepherd, Inc., in Mason City and Josh Barnes with Osage Municipal Utilities – were among 40 who graduated from the Leadership Iowa program during the 2018 Taking Care of Business Conference in Coralville last month. Leadership Iowa, a program of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation, is an eight-month professional development program that allowed participants to travel "to numerous locations throughout the state to learn about those issues and to gain a better understanding of the role they can play in addressing them."
Vaith earns Century 21 awards
Lola Vaith, broker associate with CENTURY 21 Preferred, earned the CENTURY 21 System's Pinnacle Producer Award for customer satisfaction in 2017. The award is given to associates who receive a minimum index of 95 percent for two consecutive years.
Vogelson receives Iowa Public Health Hero award
Kara Vogelson, organizational development and research manager and assistant deputy director of administrative operations for Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health, will receive one of three Iowa Public Health Hero awards Nov. 28 in Iowa City. The awards recognize "leaders whose contributions across a range of disciplines are helping to promote better health and prevent disease throughout the state of Iowa."
Vogelson has held multiple positions with Cerro Gordo Health since 2002. She led the department's accreditation, just the second department in Iowa to attain it, in February 2018.
Award recipients were nominated by Iowa public health practice peers.

Wells Fargo names Hackman to Leaders Club
Wells Fargo Home Mortgage recently named Mary Hackman, home mortgage consultant, to its 2017 Leaders Club for the 16th consecutive year. Whalen receives national EDC award
Rick Whalen, director of economic development for Butler County REC and Franklin REC received the 2018 NREDA Rural Economic Development Leadership Award at the National Rural Economic Developers Association's annual conference, Nov. 7-9 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Wilkins receives President's Producer Award
Dodie Wilkins, owner/broker of CENTURY 21 Preferred, earned the CENTURY 21 System’s President’s Producer Award for outstanding sales production and commitment to quality service in 2017. The award is given to associates who earn the Centurion Award and the CENTURY 21 Quality Service Pinnacle Award in the same calendar year.
The CENTURION Producer award honors associates who have sales production of at least 70 closed units within a calendar year.

Cerro Gordo Health grant will go toward five schools
The University of Iowa College of Public Health and its Business Leadership Network named Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health one of seven winners in its Community Grant Program. The $3,000 award will be used to install sensory pathways within five elementary schools in Mason City and Clear Lake to provide a physical activity outlet for students between classes. According to a release, "Similar pathways have been found to improve attention and behaviors of students in the classroom, and provide a convenient and effective way for youth to engage in healthy lifestyle behaviors."

Staff members at Manly Specialty Care claimed two of the seven awards given Dec. 7 at the Care Initiatives annual awards brunch in West Des Moines. Care Initiatives operates 52 facilities throughout Iowa.

Hancock County Health System names Zwiefel CEO
Britt-based Hancock County Health System named Laura Zwiefel its CEO/administrator, Jan. 26. Zwiefel has been with HCHS for 28 years, the last 21 years as chief nursing officer and assistant sdministrator.
She replaces Jeff Stampohar who resigned Jan. 26 after two years in Britt. He took a similar role in Baudette, Minnesota.

Kolbet new executive secretary for Rotary
Suellen Kolbet of New Hampton will succeed John Last of Mason City as executive secretary for Rotary District 5970, effective July 1. The district encompasses 53 Rotary clubs across the northern half of Iowa. Kolbet has been a Rotary member since 1994 and will retire as the city clerk of New Hampton in May.

Nelson joins Mercy Diabetes Center
Jeremiah Nelson, MD, FAAP, has joined the Mercy Diabetes Center. Nelson was diagnosed with Type 1 autoimmune diabetes at age 11, inspiring him to pursue a career in medicine.
He started medical school at age 18 at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. His diabetes-focused fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis also included pediatric endocrinology.

Sue Phinney, a Clear Lake native, is a teller at the West Branch. She recently married and now has a daughter and two granddaughters.
Jamie Smith, who lives in Garner with her two children, was recently promoted to indirect lending specialist. She has been in finance for more than 20 years.
Kyle Mussman, Mason City native, was promoted to personal account representative at the Main Branch. He has been with NICCU for almost five years, is married and has two kids.
Nielsen joins First Citizens as CFO; Gribben promoted to COO
Mason City-based First Citizens Bank recently announced the hiring of Sarah Nielsen as chief financial officer. She replaces Jeff Gribben who is the new executive vice president/chief operating officer.
Nielsen has more than 22 years of financial leadership experience, and from August 2005 to June 2017 was CFO for Winnebago Industries, Inc. in Forest City. Prior to that, she was a senior manager in the audit practice with Deloitte & Touche, LLP in Minneapolis. Nielsen graduated from North Dakota and is a CPA; she lives in Clear Lake with her husband and two children.
Gribben was the bank's CFO for the past 17 years. In his new position, he will provide "overall strategic leadership and direction to the company in all areas of business," according to a release.
Nieman joins Mercy – Clear Lake
Kelly Nieman, advanced practice registered nurse, has joined Mercy Family Clinic – Clear Lake. Nieman graduated from Allen and St. Louis, grew up in Lake Mills and lives in Clear Lake with her husband. She previously worked at Mercy's emergency department.
Nosko, Springer join IMT
Garner-based Iowa Mold Tooling Co., Inc. announced the hire of two new design engineers, Jonathan Nosko and John Springer. Nosko earned a degree from Wisconsin-Platteville, while Spring is a graduate of Wisconsin-Madison.
NSB Bank promotes three
Kirk Paulson, president and CEO of NSB Bank in Mason City and Northwood, recently announced the promotion three employees.
Drew Gappa is the new vice president. Gappa, originally from Emmetsburg, started his banking career in 2008 and joined NSB Bank in April 2013 as a loan officer. He graduated from Northern Iowa.
Jillian McIntire is the new head of retail sales. McIntire graduated from Tripoli and attended Wartburg. She started her banking career in June 2007 as a part-time teller in NSB's Mason City office and has held three other positions with NSB.
Ginger Schwab is the new deposit specialist and teller supervisor. Schwab, who grew up in Crawford, Nebraska, earned an associates degree from Western Nebraska and is taking graduate online courses from Buena Vista.

Nick Gales has joined NutriQuest as director of finance. Prior to joining NutriQuest, Gales served as a business initiatives consultant for Wells Fargo. He holds master's and bachelor degrees from St. Thomas and lives in Mason City with his wife and children.
Ondoma joins Mercy Neurosurgery Clinic
Dr. Solomon M. Ondoma joined Mercy Neurosurgery Clinic. He completed his internship and his medical training at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Mbarara, Uganda and later worked as a surgical officer in the country. He was a research association at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and recently completed his residency at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. He and his wife have three children.

Tim Ostrander has joined the Mason City Motor Company sales team. Ostrander is a native of the Mason City area, currently lives in Ventura, and has more than 25 years of automotive sales experience.

Dr. Joseph Petersen joined Britt-based Hancock County Health System in early August. He will work at the inpatient unit as well as provide family practice services. Petersen, a native of Cushing, earned degrees from Des Moines University and completed his residency at Trinity Family. He lives in Britt.

Britt-based Hancock County Health System's rehabilitation department announced the addition of Sara Ysen as a physical therapist. Ysen, a Minnesota native, has a degree from Saint Scolastica and more than 10 years of health care experience. She lives with her husband and their son in rural Woden.

ReTech names Kraus president of Algona division
Ken Kraus was named president of UMC ReTech, Universal Manufacturing Company's operating division in Algona. Kraus joined ReTech in January 2016 as director of sales and previously spent 13 years with equipment manufacturers in Iowa. Kraus, a graduate of St. Ansgar and former Waldorf student, lives in Garner with his family.

Rebecca Richards, doctor of nursing practice, has joined the department of Medical Oncology at Mercy Cancer Center in Mason City. Richards, a native of Juneau, Wisconsin, received degrees from Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has worked on a contract basis with Mercy since 2016.

Sandra Rohr, an advanced practice registered nurse, has joined the medical team of Mercy Family Medicine Residency in Mason City.
