NEW YORK – The Columbia baseball program has 13 current members of the squad competing in collegiate summer leagues this season, working around the COVID-19 pandemic to stay sharp for the upcoming 2021. Here's a look at how the Lions have fared thus far.
In the Expedition League,
Joshua Solomon picked up his power surge from the Lions' brief spring season. The rising junior leads the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs with six home runs and has added 17 RBI to go with a .313 batting average.
Also in the Expedition League,
Mike Decker has played in 21 contests and made three pitching appearances for the Hasting Sodbusters. At the plate, he is hitting .231 with five doubles and 11 RBI. On the hill, Decker has struck out four in five innings pitched.
Staying out west,
Austin Mowrey saw action in 14 games in the San Diego League with the Jets.
Weston Eberly,
Tyler MacGregor,
Lewis Menendez and
Jacob Phelps have spent time in Florida for their respective clubs. Eberly, who has seen action in 13 contests either behind the plate or in the outfield for the Seminole County Snappers, has drawn seven walks in 28 plate appearances and scored eight runs. MacGregor is hitting .308 with five runs and a dinger through eight games for the Juno Beach Loggerheads.
Menendez and Phelps are both back with the Boca Raton Blazers, where they played the previous summer. Phelps played both ways for the Blazers, knocking in eight runs in 11 games offensively and pitching in relief twice with four strikeouts in four innings of work. Menendez has gone 4-for-10 with a double and six RBI in his last three games and has knocked in 10 for the season in 18 appearances.
Moving to the Northwoods League, the Lions have three players competing. Shortstop
Andy Blake is batting .280 with three homers and 11 RBI in 32 games for the Green Bay Booyah and was named to the All-Star Team.
Billy Black has gotten into seven games for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters and has posted back-to-back scoreless relief outings with six strikeouts in three innings. Incoming first-year Derek Yoo was picked up by the Great Lakes Resorters where he has made four appearances lasting 12.2 innings.
John San Jule is having a solid summer with the DuPage Hounds in the Midwest Collegiate League. The rising sophomore is hitting .268 with 17 runs, 12 RBI and 12 stolen bases and his play has guided the Hounds to the postseason.
Jack Chernow is riding a seven-game hitting streak to bring his average to .282 in 17 games with the Giants of the Atlantic League. Also in the Northeast,
Brett Holtz has played six games, picking up four RBI and four hits, for the Lumberjacks of the Hudson Valley Baseball Association.
