Women's Basketball Falls at South Dakota, 72-65

Vermillion, S.D. -- Continuing a grueling stretch of games against stiff competition, the Creighton women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped with a 72-65 loss at South Dakota on Wednesday, Dec. 4th.

The loss pushed the Bluejays down to 6-2 on the season, while the Coyotes moved to 8-1 overall.

Trailing 5-2 early on Creighton used a seven-point run to coast out to a 9-5 edge with 7:05 remaining in the first quarter. Senior Jaylyn Agnew got the burst started with a pair of free throws, then connected from beyond the arc to give the Bluejays their first lead at 7-5. Junior Tatum Rembao capped the run with a driving layup to make it 9-5. South Dakota, however, answered with 11 straight to seize a 16-9 advantage (3:16) and held an 18-11 edge after one frame.

The Coyotes extended their lead to as much as eight points in the second quarter at 23-15 (7:13), but Creighton showed the type of grit that has allowed this squad to win six of its first seven games. Sophomore Rachael Saunders triggered the Bluejays' 9-1 surge to even the game at 24-24 (5:18). After a free throw from Rembao cut the deficit to 23-16, Saunders connected from beyond the arc and knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to make it 23-21. Moments later a trey from Agnew knotted the score at 24-24. The two teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the half as the teams were deadlocked at 33-33 at the break.

Coming out of timeout the Coyotes were on fire from the field, shooting 69% (9-13), while the Bluejays struggled to shoot 28% (5-of-18), allowing South Dakota to build a 53-46 edge heading to the final period.

The Coyotes pushed their edge to as much as 16 late in the fourth (72-56), but the Bluejays closed the game on a 9-0 run, getting four points from freshman Dee Dee Pryor.

Sophomore Payton Brotzki and junior Tatum Rembao led Creighton with 13 points, while Agnew closed the game with 12 points. South Dakota's Hannah Sjerven led all scorers with 28 points and nine rebounds in the win.

Creighton returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Dec. 8th as the Bluejays host Northern Iowa at 1:00 pm.
