Baseball Faces Texas State and McNeese State in Weekend Mini Tournament

Omaha, Neb. -- Following a opening weekend sweep over Little Rock, the Creighton Baseball team heads to Louisiana to face Texas State and McNeese State in a mini-tournament. The Bluejays are scheduled to face Texas State twice, followed by two against tournament host McNeese State.

Series History: Creighton Leads Texas State, 4-3
The Bluejays lead the overall series with the Bobcats by one game, but Texas State has taken the last two matchups. The last time Creighton faced Texas State was on March 9, 2002. The Bluejays also played in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Each time the two teams have met prior to this weekend it has been in the state of Texas, with the 2002 battle coming in a neutral site tournament in Round Rock.

Series History: Creighton Trails McNeese State, 5-0
The Bluejays have yet to put a tally in the win column against the Cowboys, dropping single games in 1992 and 1995 as well as a three-game series in Omaha in 2017.

Creighton will be playing in a tournament in Lake Charles for the third time in school history as the trips to Louisiana in 1992 and 1995 were also part of an early season tournament at McNeese State.

Scouting the Bluejays
(2019: 3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST)

Playing in a smaller park during the opening weekend series, the Bluejays' offense took advantage by plating 35 runs. Creighton smashed four home runs and 12 extra-base hits during the series. In addition the Bluejays displayed tremendous patience, working 21 walks and getting plunked six times.

Scouting the Bobcats
(2019: 2-1, 0-0 Sun Belt)

Hosting a season-opening tournament (featuring Missouri State, Nevada and Nevada) the Bobcats went 2-1 with victories over Utah and #24 Missouri State.

At the plate Texas State hit .269 in its opening weeken, led by four hits from Jaxon Williams (.444) and Jaylyn Hubbard (.308). The Bobcats scored 18 runs in the three games, but were shutout in the lone loss to Nevada.

On the mound the Bobcats allowed seven runs (four earned) during the weekend, shutting out Missouri State on Sunday. The pitching staff allowed just six walks and struck out 20 during the weekend.

Scouting the Cowboys
(2019: 3-1, 0-0 Southland)

The Cowboys opened the season with a series win over Texas-San Antonio, taking the first two games from the Roadrunners.

McNeese State offense was potent with 28 runs in the first two game, then was held to just two runs on Sunday. On Wednesday against Houston McNeese State managed just one run in eight innings. The Cowboys scored two runs in the ninth to force extra innings, then plated 10 runs in the 14th frame to take the game 13-5.

McNeese State enters the mini-tournament hitting .279 as a team in four game, led by .444 from Nate Fisbeck. Clayton Rasbeary is a step back at .368, but leads the Cowboys with three home runs and nine RBI.
