The final major of 2019 begins Thursday morning well before the sun rises on the East Coast of the United States.

The British Open returns to Northern Ireland and a designed Royal Portrush Dunluce links course for the first time since 1951. Northern Ireland native and 2011 Champion Golfer of the Year Darren Clarke hits the opening tee shot, weather permitting, at 1:35 a.m. ET (6:35 a.m. local time) from No. 1.

Among the very big names to watch: Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, three-time Open champion Tiger Woods, two-time defending PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka, a leaner-but-never-meaner Phil Mickelson and 2018 Champion Golfer of the Year Francesco Molinari.

Thursday’s notable groups and tee times include (all times Eastern):

  • Group 8 – 2:52 a.m. Mickelson, Shane Lowry, Branden Grace
  • Group 19 – 4:58 a.m. Molinari, Bryson DeChambeau, Adam Scott
  • Group 20 – 5:09 a.m. McIlroy, Gary Woodland, Paul Casey
  • Group 34 – 7:53 a.m. Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, Thorbjorn Olesen
  • Group 35 – 8:04 a.m. Koepka, Louis Oosthuizen, Shubhankar Sharma
  • Group 44 – 9:48 a.m. Justin Rose, Tony Finau, Lucas Bjerregaard
  • Group 45 – 9:59 a.m. Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Keegan Bradley
  • Group 46 – 10:10 a.m. Woods, Matt Wallace, Patrick Reed

Woods played two full and one partial practice rounds this week. He has never played Royal Portrush competitively and may or may not have been stiffed by Koepka in his attempt to get some inside knowledge from Koepka’s caddie and Portrush native Ricky Elliott.

Woods didn’t touch a club for more than two weeks after his T-21 finish at Pebble Beach in the U.S. Open and has not played in competition since the Open ended more than a month ago. He’s played only 10 rounds of pro golf since his historic victory at the Masters in April. Woods sits one victory shy from Sam Snead’s record of 82 PGA Tour wins.

For McIlroy, this Open Championship carries both the weight of a major – something he has not won since the 2014 PGA Championship – and of a return to his homeland.

Royal Portrush was re-designed over an 18-month period especially for this tournament and it will be a course stuffed with spectators, an overwhelming amount who likely cannot wait for native son McIlroy to grab his second Claret Jug.

World No. 1 Koepka tries to close out the best 16-month run in major championship success since Woods in 2000-01. A victory at Royal Portrush would give Koepka his fifth major title overall and his fourth in the past 14 months.

For weekend reference, Northern Ireland is five hours ahead of Eastern Time in the United States. So a 1 p.m. tee time at Royal Portrush means play begins at 8 a.m. on the East Coast.

2019 British Open Round 1 Update:

4:26 p.m.: And that’s it from round one. Ashton Turner bogeys 18 to finish off a 2-under 68 round. He posted four birdies and two bogeys. Bring on Friday.

3:58 p.m.: Yuki Inamori checked in with a bogey on 18, ending his round at 1-under 70. Just two more groups on the course Thursday, including Ashton Turner at 3-under.

3:18 p.m.: Not the end Jon Rahm would have wanted. He began his round with five birdies on the front nine, but finished T-3 at 3-under 68, with a third bogey on 18. Still, 3-under par is a good place to be heading into Friday.

2:45 p.m.: A strong day for Tony Finau, who played bogey-free golf and goes into the clubhouse in a tie for fourth at 3-under 68, along with a litany of other players. Meanwhile, a Jon Rahm bogey on 15 gives J.B. Holmes the solo lead.

2:25 p.m.: J.B. Holmes started with a bogey on his first hole, but he was clean the rest of the way. With a birdie on 18, Holmes jumped back into a tie for the lead at 5-under 66.

1:49 p.m.: And Rahm gets the solo lead straight back. Great bounceback to birdie 12 after a bogey on 11, putting him back at 5-under.

1:34 p.m.: Jon Rahm lost a stroke with a bogey on 11, and J.B. Holmes caught up with a birdie on 14. There’s now a three-way tie for the lead again at 4-under between Rahm, Holmes and Shane Lowry.

1:14 p.m.: Brooks Koepka wraps up his first round. He’s at T-4 with a 3-under par performance, in a real good spot to open the tournament. Koepka’s bogey on 17 put a damper on an otherwise flawless day.

1:00 p.m.: Jon Rahm closes his front nine with his fifth birdie. He’s the new solo leader at 5-under entering the back nine.

12:52 p.m.: What a tremendous back nine for Ryan Fox. After shooting 3-over before the turn, the New Zealander shot six birdies going in, flipping his score to 3-under and entering the clubhouse at T-3. His 29 was the lowest back-nine score in Open history.

12:43 p.m.: And now another co-leader as Jon Rahm birdies back-to-back holes to go 4-under. He’s off to a quick start, with four birdies through eight holes.

12:31 p.m.: Three birdies on the back nine, with the latest falling in at 17, has Tyrrell Hatton tied for the lead with Brooks Koepka and Shane Lowry at 4-under. Hatton nearly birdied 16, too, with this chip.

12:16 p.m.: Tiger Woods lived off the fairway for most of the 7th hole, which is not a recipe for success. But he managed to finish off the 7th with a bogey, continuing a stretch of above-par play. Woods is at 4-over through seven holes. For more Tiger, follow Golfweek’s Tiger Tracker.

11:56 a.m.: Well, it didn’t take too long for the world No. 1 to go T-1 at Royal Portrush. Brooks Koepka is bogey-free through 14 holes, and now is level with Shane Lowry at 4-under.

11:49 a.m.: Justin Thomas gets back under par. He opened his day with a bogey before shooting a double-bogey on 4. But the 26-year-old has worked his way back to 1-under with his latest birdie on 14.

11:40 a.m.: Jordan Spieth got off to a great start with three birdies through the first five holes, but the former Open winner has hit a bit of a snag. He double-bogeyed 8 and bogeyed 11, falling back to even-par.

10:01 a.m.: If that 8 on the first hole wasn’t bad enough for Rory McIlroy, he added this after double picking up a stroke over his next 14 holes.

9:45 a.m.: Jordan Spieth, who has not won a PGA Tour event since winning the 2017 Open Championship, is 3-under through 5 holes in Round 1.

8:55 a.m.: Nearly an eagle on the second hole for the world No. 1. Brooks Koepka finished this one off for birdie, and he’s at 1-under par through four holes.

8:10 a.m.: Sergio Garcia opens with a 3-under 68 and joins Webb Simpson and several others T-3. Shane Lowry was in earlier with the overall lead at 4-under.

8:00 a.m.: Shane Lowry wraps up a 4-under 67 to take the lead at Royal Portrush. That’s the Irishman’s best-ever first-round score at The Open.

7:15 a.m.: Mr. 3000-1.

6:21 a.m.: Through 12 holes, Phil Mickelson has fallen back to +4 overall.

5:28 a.m.: SHOCKER! McIlroy begins the British Open with two major hooks off the first tee. He two-putts the green and stumbles off the par-4, first hole with an quadruple-bogey 8. He is 7 shots off the lead after one hole.
