Gracie Morton launches a grand slam to lift Memphis to a game one victory

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team split with UT Martin Tuesday in a midweek doubleheader. Memphis earned the victory in game one by a score of 5-4 before dropping the second contest by a score of 2-0.

The Tigers move to 22-26 on the year with two conference series remaining on the regular season schedule.

UT Martin took an early lead in game one, but five runs in the second inning propelled by Gracie Morton's third home run of the season gave the Tigers enough of an edge over the home Skyhawks.

Scoring started for Memphis in the second behind a one-out bases loaded single by Delaney Smith. With the bases still loaded, Morton launched a grand slam to give Memphis a 5-1 lead.

UT Martin continued to chip away at the Tigers lead but the duo of Bayleigh Wisher and Karli Perque held strong in the circle to pull away with the game one victory. Perque earned the victory for Memphis. The Tigers scattered five hits by five separate players in the win.

Two runs in the bottom of the first inning proved to be enough in game two as Memphis was unable to score. The Tigers spread out six hits in the contest, including two from Delaney Smith and Sara Ann Davidson but stranded eight runners on base.

Mariah Nichols pitched a complete game in game two, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts. Only one of the hits was for extra bases.

Notables
  • Gracie Morton's third home run of the season was Memphis' third grand slam of the season.
  • Delaney Smith and Jessie Lamb each recorded hits in both games. Smith led Memphis with three hits on the day.
