Tigers to play pair of matches at Virginia over weekend

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's tennis team prepares to participate in the 12th annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend. The Tigers travel to Charlottesville, Va., to the hosting Virginia Cavaliers. Memphis will play a pair of matches over the weekend as part of the event.

Memphis will start the weekend against the host-team No. 23 Virginia, playing the second match of the day at noon ET. Also included in the bracket are #17 N.C. State and Utah State. The four-team bracket will then break into a consolation match between the unsuccessful squads and the championship game between the winners of Saturday's matches.

This is the eighth-consecutive year that Memphis has been a participant in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

Last time out for the Tigers resulted in narrow loss to Northwestern. Memphis claimed points from singles wins by Jan Pallares and David Stevenson and a doubles win by the team of Marshall Sullivan and Jeremy Taylor.

Virginia's last match was a narrow 4-3 loss at Louisville. The Cavaliers picked up the doubles point with wins from the #53-ranked team of Gianni Ross and William Woodall and the duo of Christian Alshon and Ammar Alhaqbani.

After starting singles with a win, Virginia would lose four of the next five singles matches to drop the decision.

Depending on the results from this match and the N.C. State and Utah State match, the Tigers will play in either the 9 a.m. consolation match or the 12 p.m. championship match on Sunday.
