North Idaho K9 retires from drug detection, tracking after 7 years

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Drug dogs - You don't have to ask if they are "a good boy/girl" ...because they always are.

The Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday the retirement of K9 Aika.

Aika is a narcotics detection specialist and tracker. She's been with the NPCSO for two years, but her career spans for almost seven.

She began her work with her handler, Deputy JR Gregory in Lincoln County Idaho in 2011. The team worked there for five years. Aika located 12 persons during her career with Lincoln County ranging from lost subjects to suspects in crimes.

Her narcotics detections included marijuana, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and ecstasy. Aika located a total of $347,000 worth of drugs in her career.

With her combined time with both agencies Aika has located 30 pounds of meth with an estimated street value of $67,000, over 20 pounds of marijuana, estimated street value $10,000, around nine pounds of heroin, estimated street value of $270,000 and multiple firearms associated with drugs during traffic stops and search warrants.

Aika also made an appearance in the hit movie "We're the Millers" with Jennifer Aniston. Look for her at the border where she and Deputy Gregory play the part of the Border Patrol Officers. She was also one of the dogs in a movie where they chase the illegal alien across a field from a motor home, according to NPCSO.

Nez Perce County hired Deputy Gregory in 2017 and Aika transferred with him. Her biggest case to date occurred here in Nez Perce County during a traffic stop where two pounds of meth, one pound of heroin and 16 firearms were located and seized from the vehicle.

Aika has aggressive arthritis at this point in her life and will retire to a life of luxury with her handler, Deputy Gregory.
