Bangalore Karnataka Floods August 15 highlights: On the occasion of 73rd Independence Day, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa unfurled the national flag and reviewed the guard of honour at the Field Marshal Manekshaw parade ground, Cubbon Road.

Meanwhile, there has been a spurt in dengue cases in Bengaluru with as many has 563 new cases registered in four days. According to the data by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) till Sunday, the city had recorded 4,443 cases but by Wednesday, the number had risen to 5,006.

To tackle the problem, the civic authority has taken up door-to-door awareness campaigns on dengue in the worst-affected wards and areas. The data shows east zone is worst affected with 1,937 confirmed cases since January 2019. Bengaluru South recorded 786 cases, Mahadevapura (760). Dasarahalli Zone has recorded lowest number with 116 cases from January 2019 to 14 August.

According to the reports, dengue cases was at its peak in the year 2017 when as many as 17,844 positive cases were reported in Karnataka.

Shutdown of 2 engg. colleges in Bangalore: Over 200 students re-alloted to other institutes

Lack of funds to run two institutions in Bangalore has led to over 200 engineering students in Bengaluru getting re-alloted to seats in alternate colleges.

The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has notified re-allotment of students from Yellamma Dasappa Institute of Technology and Sri Vidya Vinayaka Institute of Technology. Students who had cleared as well as those who failed to clear exams for their successive semesters were included in the list.

CM Yediyurappa to leave for Delhi this evening

Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa will leave for Delhi at 7.40 pm. He will be in the national capital till Saturday where he'll meet PM Modi, Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri among others.

Bengaluru’s demand for a US Consulate could ease travel woes

Bengaluru’s long-standing dream of hosting a US consulate in the city is one step closer to reality as Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has expressed his support for the same. Responding to the latest request made by BJP’s Karnataka co-spokesperson AH Anand through Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda for the same, Jaishankar expressed his support for the request saying, “I am sure that given its strong economic and social link with the US, Bengaluru will also be considered as a possible location for setting up the new US consulate.” Read more

Commenting on Article 370 being revoked from Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa said, "The state of Kashmir is India’s crown. It boggles one’s imagination on what has been happening in the past seven decades in Kashmir, the home of the Kashyapas. What was a cradle of Indian culture had been given a uni-dimensional cultural narrative, and the native settlers had been driven out."

Karnataka government will take measures to repair/rebuild houses destroyed in floods: BS Yediyurappa

"The natural disaster has left a trail of death and destruction, destroying properties and assets worth thousands of crores of rupees. The Karnataka Government will take all measures possible to repair the houses destroyed in the flood if they could be repaired or help its owners build them afresh if they cannot be repaired," Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa said during his Independence Day address to the state in Bengaluru this morning.

Karnataka floods: At relief camp in Belagavi college, race against time to vacate campus

Their homes reduced to a rubble by the swollen Malaprabha river on the night of August 5, most of the 2,160 displaced people living at the relief camp in Government Junior College, in Belagavi district’s Gokak town, are racing against time.

For them, there is little to cheer even as floodwater is receding over the lost two days across Belagavi. With Independence Day around the corner, the college officials have received instructions to ask all people at the relief camp to leave by 4 pm Wednesday (August 14).

BJP leader says BSY govt will fall if it fails to address needs of flood victims

Senior BJP leader and MLA Balachandra Jharkiholi has told flood-affected people in his constituency that the government in the state would be brought down if it fails to address needs of flood victims in the region.

The Arabhavi MLA said this after visiting a relief camp in Belagavi district where he was told about the collapse of a large number of houses. Balachandra, one of the four Jharkiholi brothers, later issued a statement that his remarks were not made seriously.

Normal rain in Kodagu

Kodagu district has received a rainfall of 9.95 mm during the last 24 hours ending on Wednesday at 8.30 am.

About 1,970.98 mm of rain has been recorded in the district from January till date. There was a moderate rainfall on Wednesday.

Talukwise rain details are: Madikeri - 17.60 mm, Virajpet - 5.65 mm and Somwarpet - 6.60 mm.

The water level in the Harangi reservoir on Wednesday was 2,856.73-feet. Maximum storage level of the dam is 2,859-feet. The inflow was 7,077 cusec and the outflow was 3,300 cusec.

Traffic ban on Charmadi Ghat for one month

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S has enforced a month-long ban on the movement of vehicles on Charmadi Ghat (NH-73) from August 15 to September 14.

According to a report submitted by the Executive Engineer of the national highway division of PWD, the work on clearing the road for traffic (including removing soil from landslides) and repairing damaged roads, will take a minimum of 30 days. Besides heavy rainfall, gusty wind is hampering the ongoing work on clearing the debris, sources added.

Following a ban on traffic on Charmadi Ghat, vehicles can ply via Ujire-Dharmasthala-Kokkada-Gundya- Shiradi and Mudigere Handpost-Jannapura-Anemahal -Shiradi-Gundya.

Eminent Kannada writer SL Bhyrappa will flag off Mysuru Dasara celebrations this year. Members of the high-powered committee, who met in Bengaluru on Wednesday, decided against a grandiose Dasara this year, after floods and drought in Karnataka. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who chaired the meeting, said though Dasara would be low-key this time, all the traditional events that are part of the 10-day festival will be held. Yediyurappa allocated Rs 20.5 crore for the celebrations.

SL Bhyrappa, Saraswathi Samman recipient will flag off the celebrations atop Chamundi Hills in Mysuru on September 28.

Traffic diversions in Bangalore from 8.30 am today

According to Bangalore Traffic Police, due to Independence day celebration traffic will be diverted today from 08.30 am to 10.30 am from BRV Junction to Kamaraj Road Junction (both directions) on Cubbon Road.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka state government’s Independence Day celebrations will be held with a ceremonial parade at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground, Cubbon Road on Thursday, where Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will receive the salute.

In the light of VIP movements and high security provided in these areas, the Bengaluru City Traffic Police (BTP) has put in place several regulations in the Central Business District Areas. No parking zones have been identified during the first half of the day, which include Central Street (from Anil Kumble Circle to Shivajinagar Bus Stand), Cubbon Road (from C.T.O. Circle to K.R.Road and Cubbon Road Junction), and MG Road (from Anil Kumble Circle to Queens Circle- both Sides).
