Bangalore news August 19 highlights: Bengaluru’s iconic Independence Day Lalbagh flower show has collected an all-time record of Rs 2.1 crore from tickets this time. The 210th edition of the flower show was held across 10 days from August 9 to 18 and was dedicated to former Mysuru ruler Jayacharamaja Wodeyar as part of his 100th birth anniversary celebrations.

As usual, the highest footfall and thereby collection was made on August 15, when Rs 80.7 lakh was collected with 1,31,000 adults and 41,100 children visiting the Lalbagh botanical garden on the Independence Day itself.

Meanwhile, having run the government without a cabinet for 22 days, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa finally got the go-ahead on Saturday from BJP national president Amit Shah to undertake the exercise tomorrow (August 20).

BDA revises public visiting time

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has revised the timings during which the general public can meet the officials. "The general public can visit the BDA office between 3 and 5 pm and meet the concerned officers at their offices for redressal of their grievances," a statement released on Monday said.

BDA officials will hold public grievance meetings on second and fourth Wednesdays every month at 3 pm.

100Books: Bengaluru volunteers take English to underprivileged kids, with 100 books and a tab

To make sure students of government schools are well-versed in the English language, a group of citizens has come up with a unique initiative in Bengaluru. 100Books is working to improve the English reading and comprehension skills of students in underprivileged schools in the city as well as neighbouring Tamil Nadu. 

100Books was conceived by Vijay Mehra, a BITS Pilani & ISB graduate and a serial entrepreneur. Explaining its concept to Indianexpress.com, Mehra says a lot of schools that cater to underprivileged children teach English, or their curriculum is in English, but tests conducted by his group showed English-reading skills of these students were poor, and comprehension worse. 2637 Gramin Dak Sevak posts vacant in Karnataka Postal Circle

The Karnataka Postal Circle has issued a notification for filling up 2,637 vacant posts of Gramin Dak Sevaks in the department of posts, Karnataka Circle.

The minimum qualification required is SSLC and minimum age shall be between 18 to 40 years with relaxation to SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates. Candidates can register their name in the portal https:/Iindiapost.gov.in or http://appost.in/ gdonline.

OBC and other category candidates have to pay fees of Rs.100/- at any Head Post Offices or at selected Sub post office counter. Fees can also be paid online through online mode of payment using the URL provided in the Home page. Fee payment is exempted for all female, SC/ST and PWO candidates. All the applicants/candidates have to apply online only. Detailed instructions are available in the website http://appost.in/gdsonline.The last-date for applying online is September 4, 2019.

HSR Layout accident: Driver arrested, booked for drunken driving

According to the HSR Layout traffic police, the driver was under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of the SUV he was driving. "The incident took place around 3 pm on Sunday when the car rammed into people crowded on the pavement in front of a hotel on HSR Layout 7th Phase 14th Cross, some eating while others waiting for their food," a traffic police officer told Indianexpress.com. 

Two people out of the seven are severely injured due to the impact of the collision while the other five sustained minor injuries. The police added that the driver was arrested and an FIR has been filed at the HSR Layout Traffic Police station against the driver identified as Rajendra (30) under sections 185 (Drunken driving) and 279 (Rash driving) under Motor Vehicles Act.

At least seven people were injured after a driver, allegedly drunk, lost control of the car and drove onto a pavement in Bengaluru. The accident, which was captured in a CCTV camera, shows the car suddenly veering towards the pavement and hitting the two-wheelers parked near the footpath before ploughing into the pedestrians. The mishap occurred in front of a hotel at HSR Layout on Sunday afternoon. Read more

Karnataka phone tapping: CM B S Yediyurappa wants CBI to probe

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said Sunday that he will ask the CBI to investigate the alleged illegal tapping of phones of politicians and bureaucrats by the state police during the previous Congress-JD(S) coalition government headed by H D Kumaraswamy. “In the matter of telephone tapping, the leader of the Congress party in the state legislature (Siddaramaiah) and many other leaders have demanded a probe to bring out the truth and so we are going to issue orders tomorrow to hand over the  matter to the CBI for a thorough investigation and action against all those who are involved,’’ Yediyurappa said. BBMP kick starts 'Adopt a Street' programme

The solid waste management (SWM) cell of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is open to 'Adopt a Street' programme, planned to give streets in Bengaluru a facelift. "CSR funds can be used for street cleaning, greening, and walkability with the provision of street facilities, and supplementing BBMP’s existing services. The programme is now open," Randeep D, BBMP special commissioner (solid waste management) said.

BMTC's Telegram group on route KIAS 15 gets over 1000 members

The Telegram group, formed by the manager of the Whitefield depot, now helps hundreds of commuters on route KIAS 15 for their travel to the airport. The group, on Sunday, expanded more, as over a thousand members are now able to receive real-time data on Vayu Vajra AC Volvo buses that run on the Whitefield-Kempegowda International Airport route.
