With 515 fresh COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, Karnataka’s tally rose to 4,835 on Friday. While most cases were reported from coastal district Udupi (204), 74 cases were recorded in Yadgir. At the same time, 83 patients recovered from the infection taking the total number of discharges in the state to 1,688.

Excluding 57 deaths linked to the pandemic so far, 3,088 patients are admitted to designated hospitals in the state and are undergoing treatment. Of these, 13 patients are in the Intensive Care Units.

Meanwhile, Karnataka’s Hubballi railway station is set to get the world’s longest railway platform with dimensions of 1,400-metre length and 10-metre width.

Confirming the same, South Western Railway (SWR) officials told indianexpress.com that the extension work in Platform number 1 of the Hubballi Junction is underway. While the existing platform is 550-metre long, it will be extended to 1,400 metre in a year, SWR officials said.

Karnataka records over 500 COVID-19 cases for first time

With 515 fresh COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, the total in Karnataka rose to 4835 on Friday.

While most cases were confirmed in coastal district Udupi (204), 74 cases were recorded in Yadgir. Weather-based smart irrigation system at Bengaluru airport

In a bid to minimise water usage for watering plants in its 100-acre landscape, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has announced the deployment of a weather-based Smart Automatic Irrigation System. The system, which can be controlled from an application installed in a mobile phone, will help irrigate plants based on the calculation of various parameters, including the evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and weather conditions, officials explain.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Bangalore International Airport Limited claimed that KIA is the first in India to deploy this technology.

Mallikarjun Kharge is Congress' Karnataka Rajya Sabha candidate

The All India Congress Committee Friday announced the nomination of senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge as the party candidate for the upcoming elections to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

"Party president Sonia Gandhi has approved the candidature of Mallikarjun Kharge as Congress candidate for the ensuing biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka," a release from AICC confirmed.

Locust swarm war room at UAS

The University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, has set up a locust swarm war room to protect the fields from locust attack and see that the yield is retained. According to UAS Vice-Chancellor M B Chetti the helpline has been started and the farmers who identify locust attack can dial 18004 251150 and get remedy for their problem.

"The UAS is already working on how to save the farmers from locust attack. Farmers from throughout Karnataka can dial the helpline number, and get response for their grievances," said M B Chetti. "The experts at the war room are also studying the movement of these locusts and in which direction they are moving," he added.

Koppal: Leopard killed in road accident

A one-year-old female leopard was killed in a road accident near Hemagudda in Gangavathi Taluk, Koppal district on Friday morning.

According to forest department officials, the leopard was hit by an unknown vehicle on State Highway near Hemagudda village. The forest officials inspected the accident site and the leopard was buried after medical examination.

Wild Karnataka to premier on Discovery channels

Kannada filmmaker-actor Rishab Shetty has turned narrator for Wild Karnataka, a documentary made by Bangalore-based award-winning filmmakers and wildlife photographers Amoghavarsha JS and Kalyan Varma.

Wild Karnataka was the first documentary on wild animals to get a theatrical release. It was released in cinemas in January this year and ran in theaters for 50 days. Now Wild Karnataka is set to premiere on various channels of Discovery in multiple languages, including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

KSRTC to resume its night service bus operation from today

After the Karnataka government permitted state transport buses to operate even during the night curfew hours 9 pm to 5 am, KSRTC said in a media statement that it will resume its night service bus operation from today onwards.

Karnataka Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar in an order said, “state transport corporations (BMTC, KSRTC, NEKRTC, and NWKRTC) buses have been allowed to operate during night curfew hours from 9 pm to 5 am. On the basis of their bus tickets, passengers would be allowed to commute to bus stand or from there to home, in accordance with the COVID-19 control measures, SOPs, and other guidelines.”

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, founder and Chairperson and Managing Director of Bengaluru based Biocon Limited, has been named EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year for 2020.

Kiran was selected from among 46 entrepreneurs from 41 countries and territories. She became the third Indian to win the Award after Uday Kotak of Kotak Mahindra Bank in 2014 and Narayana Murthy of Infosys in 2005.

Eight Kyrgyzstan nationals held for violating visa norms in Bidar

Karnataka police arrested eight Kyrgyzstan nationals in Bidar on Wednesday in connection with violation of visa norms. According to police, they had arrived in Bidar after attending a religious congregation at Nizamuddin in Delhi.

All eight were tested for COVID 19 and reports turned out to be negative. They were remanded in judicial custody till June 16. Two others who accompanied them have also been arrested by the police.

The police officials said, "the Kyrgyzstan nationals came to Delhi in January itself and stayed there till March 8. They arrived in Bidar on March 10. They had arrived in the city on tourist visa for religion preaching." Complaints were registered at Gandhi Ganj and Town police stations in Bidar.

No earthquake recorded: KSNDMC

Hampi recorded an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale today.

Jagadeesh, Scientific Officer at Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Bengaluru clarified that no earthquake was recorded in the KSNDMC Earthquake Monitoring Stations network. "Nearest such observation is taken from Tunghabadra dam Seismic observatory, Hospet, Hospet taluk", he said.

Hubli Jn to have world’s longest railway platform

As the South Western Railway plans to extend the area of the first platform of Hubli Junction railway station, the same is set to become the world’s longest railway platform.While the existing platform is 550-metres long, it will be extended to 1,400 metres in a year, SWR officials confirmed.

“The work is done spending Rs 90 crore for ward remodelling, building work, signalling, electrical and other related works.The work is underway and will be completed in a year,” an official added. At present, Gorakhpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh has the longest platform (1,366 m) followed by Kollam Junction (1180 m) in Kerala.
