Bangalore news highlights: Actor-playwright Girish Karnad passed away on Monday morning. He was 81. Karnad was conferred with the Jnanpith Award in 1998 for his contribution to literature and arts. Karnad was also honoured with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the government of India.

Meanwhile, the 1.4 kilometre-long main access road to Bengaluru International Airport will be closed from today for expansion as part of the ongoing infrastructure development. The main access road, which is at present four lanes wide (two on each side) will be expanded to a 10-lane road (five on each side).

At the same time, the construction work of the long-delayed road overbridge at Baiyappanahalli will resume on Tuesday, according to Bangalore Central MP P C Mohan. In a tweet made on Sunday, he wrote, “Happy to update that work on long pending, incomplete ROB in Baiyappanahalli wil start on 11th June. I thank Smt @nsitharaman for releasing Def land & Rly Min Shri @PiyushGoyal for taking interest on this infra proj that wil provide huge relief to commuters (sic).â

The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, took to Twitter to express his grief on Girish Karnad's death. Pinarayi Vijayan said, "we have lost one of the greatest literary minds of our time.
The last rites of renowned actor-playwright Girish Karnad was performed at Kalpalli electric crematorium, Baiyappanahalli. It was a low key and private affair with family members and close friends. As per Karnad's wishes, government honours were not accepted and religious customs were not followed during the last rites.

His rise as a playwright in the 1960s, marked the coming of age of modern Indian playwriting in Kannada, just as Badal Sarkar did in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi, and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi. He is a recipient of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India. Karnad made his acting as well as screenwriting debut in a Kannada movie, Samskara (1970), based on a novel by U.R. Ananthamurthy and directed by Pattabhirama Reddy. That movie won the first President's Golden Lotus Award for Kannada cinema.

In a massive go-green initiative, more than 600 Bangaloreans gathered together at KR Puram on Sunday to prepare around one lakh seed balls. The seed balls from the event organised by SayTrees, a voluntary organisation involved in tree plantation across India to increase green cover, will be sent to the Western Ghats for planting. As farmers are set to block traffic on the Bengaluru-Mysuru road and the interstate highway through Chamarajanagar, traffic around these areas is likely to be disrupted today. The protest, led by Rajya Raitha Sangha, is against the proposed amendments to the land acquisition act, which is allegedly "industry-friendly". While the protests might affect traffic on Mysuru-Hunsur road as well, traffic police have instructed vehiclesn travelling from Mysuru to Bengaluru to reroute via Bannur and Kanakapura to avoid Ramanagara.

As per the new route envisioned by the airport authorities until early 2021, when the widened main access road opens for commute, vehicles moving towards the Airport will turn right at the first roundabout after the Trumpet Interchange, and enter the SAR to reach the Terminal. Vehicles heading out of the Airport from the departure gates, will follow the existing exit path from the Terminal and head towards P6 parking to reach the SAR. Vehicles returning from arrival gates will continue using the existing route towards SAR, the spokesperson explains.
