Chennai News June 14 Highlights: In its first Lok Sabha contest without party stalwarts M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, the ruling AIADMK faltered winning only one seat despite its alliance partner BJP’s spectacular showing outside the state. The Opposition, led by the DMK, wrested all the 37 seats the AIADMK had won in the previous election.

“DMK made false propaganda about Neutrino, Hydrocarbon, NEET, etc. They made people believe as if these schemes were bought by our government, but the truth is these schemes were signed during the regime of the Congress-DMK alliance,” says Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D.Jayakumar.

Meanwhile, Munuswamy, a 36-year-old homosexual was arrested by the police for allegedly chopping off the genitals of two men, one of whom died said the police on Wednesday. The accused, who is a native of Manamadurai was arrested following the release of video clips by police which had visuals of him walking under a flyover near Retteri in North Chennai.

Dakshinachitra museum organizes workshop at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu State Chapter, in collaboration with the Dakshinachitra Museum and Friends of Heritage Sites conducted a workshop, Capacity Building Heritage Tourism Workshop at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. The 20-half-day workshop was organized at Dakshina Chitra Museum for local guides and tourism professionals in the State.

Chennai Event: Theatre play at Alliance Française of Madras

Theatre fans can note that Alliance Française of Madras will be hosting a play, Bhasa's Urubhangma  from 7 pm to 08:15 pm at the centre's Edouard Michelin Auditorium today. The play, which has been directed and adapted by Shakthi, will feature Theatre Nisha.

Urubhangam is a play that has been adapted from Bhasa's adaptation of life post the Mahabharatha war and celebrates the life of King Duryodhana, the eldest of the Kauravas and  explores the lives of the Kauravas, their motives and their side of the story.

Weekend movie binge

For all the cine lovers out there, this weekend offers an opportunity to have the perfect movie marathon with a host of movies releasing today. The much waited Men in Black: International, starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson has finally hit the theatres with a release in four languages - English, Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans who loved watching Chris and Tessa in Thor: Ragnarok would definitely not want to sit this flick out! Those of you who enjoy watching animated flicks can grab a tub of popcorn and watch the Secret Life of Pets 2, the sequel to the highly acclaimed 2016 release, The Secret Life of Pets. 

Kollywood fans can head to the theatres to watch the psychological thriller, Game Over starring Taapsee Pannu or Nejamundu Nermaiyundu Odu Raja if you would like some rib-tickling laughter instead. Meanwhile, Bollywood lovers can catch Annant Jaaitpaal’s Kissebaaz and Nayan Pachori’s Rescue and Khamoshi, the Hindi version of the Tamil flick, Devi 2. So head to the nearest theatres, grab a popcorn tub and prepare to be immersed in the reel world.

Woman stabbed to death by Tamil Nadu Speaker's driver over water feud

A woman, Subhashini, was stabbed to death by Adimoola Ramakrishnan, the driver of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker, P Dhanapal at Anakaputhur in Chennai on Thursday night. According to police reports, the victim got into a fight with Dhanapal last night after the latter prevented Subhashini and her husband from switching on the motor since it was allegedly empty. 

In the ensuing fight, Dhanapal took out a knife and stabbed Subhashini under the chin, following which she was rushed to the hospital. The victim later succumbed to her injuries. The police arrested Adimoola Ramakrishnan today.

Chennai Event: Awareness Programme on Learning Disabilities this weekend

Alpha to Omega Learning Centre and St. John's Public School will be hosting a two-day awareness programme on June 15 and June 16 from 09:30 am to 04:30 pm on Specific Learning Disabilities and Creating a Holistic Inclusive School at St. John's Public School in Medavakkam, Chennai.

The programme aims to spread awareness on learning disabilities in children and the need to create inclusive classrooms that will benefit students studying in mainstream and special-needs schools. Spread over two days, Day 1 on Saturday will be a workshop for principals, teachers and the heads of various schools in Chennai, while Day 2 on Sunday will be a seminar for parents.

Tamil writer Sabarinathan has bagged the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar award this year for his poetry titled 'Vaal'. The 29-year-old writer has also translated literary works of other authors.

Chennai Event: Pride Film Series on Saturday

Slight drizzle, thunderstorms experienced in few areas of Chennai

Bringing slight relief from the heat wave in Chennai, a few areas of the city experienced slight drizzles and thunder last night. Although there was no rain in Chennai, the temperature in the city dropped by a few degrees, making way for a cool, summer night yesterday. Meanwhile, Chennai Weather had tweeted that there were thunderstorms South of Tambaram in Chennai, following which Indian cricketer Ashwin Ravichandran took to the social media platform and tweeted, "The rain which came until Tambaram has refused to cross Tambaram." (translated from Tamil).

Heat wave to persist in Chennai and neighbouring districts: Regional Meteorological Centre

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) announced that a heat wave will continue to persist in Chennai, its neighbouring districts of Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram and other northern districts in Tamil Nadu today. The RMC added that these places would experience at least 3C higher temperature than normal. 

Chennai has been experiencing a heat wave in certain pockets of the city this week, with the temperature in these areas touching a maximum of 43C during the day. The RMC advised citizens to not step outdoors between 11 pm to 4pm in order to prevent a sunstroke.

Chennai Event: Survivor Series on Sunday

DMK MP Kanimozhi slams Thoothukudi Corporation

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi slammed the Thoothukudi Corporation today for not taking any measures towards solving the drinking water problems that are faced by the people in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. 

She said that the taxes had been increased and people were paying money and purchasing drinking water owing to the ongoing water crisis and added that until the Thoothukudi Corporation addressed these issues and took measures to solve problems, they (people) would continue with their protests.

Have submitted election manifesto to Kamal Haasan: K Bhagyaraj

Actor Bhagyaraj addressed the media after his party, Swami Sankardas Ani met actor Kamal Haasan earlier today in Chennai and said that Kamal Haasan had asked to be invited to the inauguration of the Nadigar Sangam building once construction was completed. He added that the party had submitted their election manifesto to the actor at the meeting today.

The Nadigar Sangam elections will be held at M G R Janaki Arts and Science College on June 23 and will see actors Bhagyaraj and Nasser contesting for the position of President, while actor Vishal and educationist Isari Ganesh will lock horns over the post of secretary. Meanwhile, actors Prashant and Karthi will be pitted against each other for the post of treasurer.

Southern Railway instructs authorities to communicate only in English or Hindi

Southern Railway has sent a letter to its station staff and train operation controllers instructing them to use only English or Hindi while communicating officially.

The letter issued on Wednesday said the authorities should avoid the use of regional languages while communicating officially. "The communication between the Divisional Control Office and the Station Master should be either in English or Hindi and the use of regional language should be avoided to prevent either side not understanding what is being said," it said.

Actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar takes to Twitter after actor Vishal releases Pandavar Ani's campaign video

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, the daughter of Kollywood actor Sarath Kumar took to Twitter today after good friend and actor, Vishal released a campaign video for his party, Pandavar Ani ahead of the upcoming Nadigar Sangam polls. In the video, Vishal could be seen taking digs at Sarath Kumar despite the latter not being involved in the elections.

Saddened and shocked at the video, Varalaxmi tweeted out a letter to Vishal in which she condemned his actions and said, "It's so sad instead of making a positive video about the things you have achieved, you resorted to the lowest form of campaigning." (sic) She concluded that Vishal had lost her vote for the elections, which will held on June 23.

Members of AMMK rejoin AIADMK

Sivappu Manjal Pachai teaser from today, Siddharth's Leila premiers on Netflix today

Vikravandi DMK MLA passes away

Vikravandi DMK MLA Radhamani passed away due to ill health. The 67-year-old  was undergoing treatment in Pudhucherry Jipmer Hospital for the past couple of days and unfortunately died today morning. He won the 2016 assembly election defeating the AIADMK candidate R Velu. Due to his death, Vikravandi constituency will face by-polls along with Nanguneri in Tamil Nadu.

'Swami Sarnkaradas Ani' to meet Kamal Haasan

Veteran filmmaker K.Bhagyaraj-led Swami Sankaradas Ani will meet Kamal Haasan to seek his support for the upcoming South Indian Film Artistes Association (Nadigar Sangam) election. The team will contest against Vishal's 'Paandavar Ani'. While Bhagyaraj locks horns with Nasser for the post of President, producer-educationist Isari Ganesh will take on Vishal for the General Secretary post. The election is scheduled to take place on June 23.

Ace paddler Sharath Kamal will play for the Chennai Lions in the third season of the Ultimate Tennis League, which will be held in New Delhi from July 25. Kamal, a nine-time national champion, was picked by the Chennai team, a new entrant in the league, during the players draft held here Thursday. The two other new teams in the league are U Mumba TT and Puneri Paltan Table Tennis. In a video message, Kamal said that he will try and give his best in the tournament.

The National Investigation Agency on Wednesday raided seven locations in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore, reported news agency PTI. The searches, based on a fresh case filed in the city, were at the residences of youths suspected to be in contact with members of the Islamic State group.

Raids were conducted by a team of NIA sleuths at seven places in the city on the basis of inputs that certain people are reportedly in touch with those behind the Easter day attacks on social media, police sources said.
