Congress names 401 office-bearers for its Gujarat unit, list took over eight months

Among the new names in the list are former BJP MLA Jitubhai Patel and former Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti leader Lalit Vasoya.

The number of Muslim candidates from the Congress was similar to the last Assembly election, but all of them had faced defeat.

Ahmedabad-based Sandip Patel, considered to be close to former state party president Bharatsinh Solanki, has been made treasurer.

The Congress on Monday released a list of 401 office-bearers for the party’s Gujarat unit. Ridden with factionalism, it took more than eight months for the Congress high command to approve the list of office-bearers. Among the new names in the list are former BJP MLA Jitubhai Patel and former Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti leader Lalit Vasoya.

While Jitubhai Patel, who joined the Congress ahead of the 2012 Assembly elections after being denied a ticket by the BJP, has been appointed as one of the vice-presidents, Vasoya, who won on a Congress ticket in last year’s Assembly polls, has been made one of the spokespersons, with Manish Doshi being appointed chief spokesperson.

A total of 22 vice-presidents, 43 general secretaries, 169 secretaries, seven joint secretaries, 11 spokespersons, six protocol secretaries, 48 executive members, 41 permanent invitees and 54 special invitees are among the office-bearers. Ahmedabad-based Sandip Patel, considered to be close to former state party president Bharatsinh Solanki, has been made treasurer.

Yunus Patel from Bharuch, considered close to Ahmed Patel, tribal leader and only Christian MLA Punabhai Gamit, lawyer Babubhai Mangukia who played a key role in roping in many PAAS leaders, and former MP Jagdish Thakor are among the vice-presidents. Another Ahmed Patel’s confidant Nishit Vyas, former state Youth Congress chief Manish Dodia and sitting woman MLA Geniben Thakor are general secretaries in the new team.

Dr Shushruth Gowda, a renowned doctor from Mysuru and KPCC general secretary, left the Congress and joined the BJP after being denied a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections. He is the son of late Dr H C Vishnumurthy, a socialist and founder chairman of a hospital in Mysuru. Gowda praised PM Modi's work and vowed to work for BJP candidate Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar's win.
