Manipur Assembly security guard arrested in connection with grenade attack

The UNLF has claimed responsibility for the grenade attack inside the Manipur Legislative Assembly complex on Friday evening injuring three security personnel including two Manipur police and a BSF jawan.

Manipur police have arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Assembly security suspected to be involved in the grenade attack inside the Manipur Assembly complex on Friday evening.

The suspect has been identified as Yumnam Deben Singh, 56, son of Y Birchandra Singh of Nambol Maibam Chingmang, Bishnupur district.

Police said, Deben, who was arrested on Saturday evening, has admitted that he was in frequent contact with the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF). The UNLF has claimed responsibility for the grenade attack inside the Manipur Legislative Assembly complex on Friday evening injuring three security personnel including two Manipur police and a BSF jawan.

Police also reportedly recovered Rs 1,31,000 in cash from the Deben’s possession, allegedly handed over to him by a self-proclaimed Major Panthoibi of the outfit.

However, police declined to disclose the details of the operations citing that the investigation was in the initial stage.

“We cannot go into details of the operation. But, the investigation is in full swing and we are confident that all those involved in the attack will be arrested soon,” said Imphal West Police SP, Jogeschandra Haobijam.

As a part of the follow-up operation of the grenade attack, a combined team comprising of Manipur police commandos and 15 Assam Rifles arrested a woman cadre of the proscribed UNLF militant on Sunday.

The woman cadre has been identified as Sandham Sangeeta, 42, wife of Laishram Amarjit Singh.

Police said the combined team recovered Rs 2,31,000 in cash from her possession, to be distributed to families of deceased UNLF cadres in connection with the raising day of the outfit.

Sangeeta is working under the command of self-proclaimed Major Panthoibi and Major Umakanta who are stationed at Myanmar added the Police.

The arrested woman is also a member of a civil body group called “Chingmi Tammi Lup”, said the police.
