Tripura CPI (M) to hold 22nd conference in capital, drop public meeting citing ‘present situation’

“We have invited them. There is no official confirmation but we hope that they will attend”, he said. However, the party has done away with the tradition of holding an open gathering before the commencement of conference, apprehending trouble. “We shall not hold any public meeting. We have taken this decision eyeing at the present situation in the state”, Bijan Dhar said.

The senior party leader explained that “present situation” implied the frequent attacks on opposition party workers and leaders. He also said the party is facing troubles in distributing CPI (M)’s mouthpiece Daily Desher Katha in the state.

The state conference will be preceded by flag hoisting and floral tributes to martyrs following which the conference will commence and continue for three sessions.

The state committee meeting held today also condemned alleged attacks on party functionaries like MLA Narayan Choudhury at Bishalgarh in Sipahijala district two days ago, when they were returning from a party meeting. Opposition leader Manik Sarkar, who also joined the meeting, was held inside a party office for several hours by alleged BJP supporters till police rescued Sarkar and escorted him to Agartala.

Apart from five people, South Tripura Zilla Sabhadhipati and senior communist party leader Himangshu Roy were also among those attacked, earlier this month,Dhar said. He alleged that no action was taken despite complaints being lodged. “We have condemned these incidents and have demanded the incumbent state government to ensure law and order immediately”, the CPI (M) leader told reporters.
