Tripura State Rifles jawan allegedly shoots himself, probe on

The jawan had recently visited his home on November 15 and resumed duty after returning to the base. Reasons for his death are still uncertain, the police said.

A rifleman from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan allegedly shot himself with his service rifle on Tuesday at Kamarmura of Tripura. The incident took place at the counter-insurgency force’s 2nd battalion in Jirania sub-division.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, an official from the state police headquarters said that Sanjit Das (32), a TSR rifleman was found dead at the force’s camp in Kamarmura at 6:25 this morning. The jawan was posted on duty as a sentry at the camp between 3-5 AM in the morning of the incident. “He was on duty as sentry from 3 am till 5 am last night. He was found dead with a bullet in his head that pierced through the chin from his self-loading service rifle (SLR). He died on the spot,” the official informed.

Das hailed from Bilaspur village in Unakoti district of the state and is survived by his wife and a four-year-old daughter. Sanjit had served under Jiania police station for a couple of months before he was transferred to TSR’s 2nd battalion camp at Kamarmura. He had recently visited his home on November 15 and resumed duty after returning to the base. Reasons for his death are still uncertain, the police said.

Earlier in May, another TSR jawan had committed suicide after murdering his wife and two children at Subhashnagar-Malaynagar area here. In 2016, a rifleman of 9th battalion of Tripura State Rifles also killed himself after shooting his girlfriend near her rented house in Durjoynagar.
