Weather forecast today HIGHLIGHTS: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Monday said rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning was expected over parts of south peninsular India during the next three to four days.
With the gradual retreat of the Southwest monsoon from northern and central parts of the country, the weather agency has predicted the arrival of the northeast monsoon around October 17. It said that conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from most parts of east and central India, some parts of northeast India and some parts of West India.
IMD has predicted isolated rainfall over the western Himalayan region, east and northeast India, and dry weather for the rest of the country.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday urged neighbouring states as well as the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal to "do something" about stubble burning the smoke emanating from which chokes Delhi during the winters. The air pollution in Delhi is worsening due to the smoke from outside, he said.
"I again urge all the governments to please do something about it. I request all the institutions - Supreme Court, NGT - to do something so that the health of the people is not affected," Kejriwal said. The chief minister has held stubble burning in neighbouring Haryana and Punjab responsible for deteriorating air quality in Delhi. "It's just the beginning, reports say that from last week of October to mid November, pollution will rise," he said at a press conference. PTI
The AQI (Air Quality Index) in Delhi was recorded at 270 which means that the national capital had a poor air quality, according to SkymetWeather. Apart from this, the areas near Ghaziabad, Greater Noida and Noida had an AQI of 300 which stood for very poor air quality.
Scattered rains are possible in Odisha till October 16. Between October 17 and October 20, rain is likely to occur in many parts of Jharkhand and isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal
Isolated light rain is possible in south Chhattisgarh between October 16 and 17. Rainfall activity will increase thereafter and continue till October 20, Skymet Weather said.
Weather experts predicted light rain for Maharashtra during the next 72 hours. Around October 17, a combination of two weather systems is likely to enhance rainfall activity.
Heavy to moderate rains are likely to occur in coastal Andhra Pradesh, interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours.
The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 20.6 degrees Celcius at 8:30 am today. "The weatherman has predicted a clear sky for the day, with the maximum temperature settling at 33 degrees Celcius," a MeT official said. The maximum and minimum temperatures on Sunday were 33.6 and 28 degrees respectively.
Due to delayed withdrawal of monsoon from major parts of Maharashtra - which normally starts by October 1 - rain along with thunder and lightning has continued over Pune, Ahmednagar, Nashik and some Konkan districts. Read more here
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded to be 270, in the poor category, while adjoining areas of Ghaziabad and Noida very poor air quality, with the index crossing the 300 mark.
Andhra Pradesh recorded heavy rain during the last 24 hours, with hefty showers in Kakinada and Visakhapatnam and light rain in other districts, Skymet Weather reported.
