Weather forecast Highlights: As the southwest monsoon withdraws from northern and central regions of the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Tuesday predicted rainfall over the southern peninsula. It said parts of Odisha, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala would receive “scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning”.
Further, with the gradual withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, conditions are becoming favourable for the onset of the northeast monsoon. The weather agency has predicted the commencement over peninsular India around October 17. The northeast monsoon is crucial for Tamil Nadu, which receives 70 per cent of its annual rainfall in the October-December period.
In other news, the air quality in New Delhi dropped to ‘hazardous’ on Tuesday, with PM10 levels rising to 613 in Wazirpur. Dwarka and Ghaziabad recorded ‘hazardous’ levels too as AQI levels touched 449 and 330 respectively, according to Delhi Pollution Control Commitee data.
Conditions are becoming favourable for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from some more parts of central Bay of Bengal, some more parts of south India, remaining parts of west India and some more parts of central Arabian Sea during next 24 hours. Thereafter, conditions will become favourable for withdrawal of southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of the country and simultaneous
commencement of northeast monsoon rains over southeast India during subsequent 48 hours, said IMD.
While Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has blamed stubble burning in the neighbouring states for deterioration of air quality in the city, SAFAR, the ministry of earth science's air quality and weather forecast service, has said the share of biomass burning in PM 2.5 concentration in Delhi has remained less than 10 per cent so far, reported PTI.
National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sought report from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab stating the action taken to stop the burning of crops (stubble burning). The report has to be filed by November 15 which is also the next date of hearing, reported ANI.
The southwest monsoon has further withdrawn from north Bay of Bengal, some parts of central Bay of Bengal, entire Odisha, Chhattisgarh, some parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, some more parts of Telangana, entire Vidarbha, Marathawada, some parts of North Interior Karnataka, most parts of Madhya Maharashtra, some more parts of Konkan, entire north Arabian Sea and some parts of central Arabian Sea, the IMD said in its bulletin this morning.
Kerala can expect rainfall today as the southwest monsoon gradually withdraws from the country. In Kochi, the IMD has predicted general cloudy skies wih a few spells of rain or thundershowers. The city received 76 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am Tuesday.
The weather department has predicted cloudy skies and light rains today in Chennai. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be recorded at 34 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively. The onset of the northeast monsoon, which feeds Tamil Nadu 70 per cent of its rainfall, will commence around October 17.

The temperature has definitely dipped in the national capital region as residents gear up for winter. With Diwali around the corner, the air quality has started to deteriorate — it was in the "very poor" category on Monday, and could deteriorate further Tuesday.
