A Bend man lost his life in a rollover crash on Highway 22 Friday night.

Oregon State Police responded to the report of a crash on Highway 22 near milepost 64 involving a 2001 Kenworth central petro fuel truck Friday night.

Officers say the vehicle lost traction on the icy road and rolled over coming to a stop blocking the highway. The fuel tank then ruptured and caught fire, spreading to nearby brush.

A Idanha-Detroit Fire Protection District fire engine that was responding to the scene also lost control on the icy road and rolled onto its side, officers say. There were additional collisions in the area that resulted in no injuries.

The driver of the truck was identified as 58-year-old Ronald Edward Scurlock from Bend. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Highway 22 remains closed and travelers are urged to use alternate routes.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and other agencies are responding to the scene.

An unknown amount of fuel from the gasoline truck made its way to the North Santiam River. The tanker was carrying 11,500 gallons of gasoline.

At least some of the fuel made its way downstream and could be smelled from the town of Detroit, about 10 miles west of the crash site, officials say.

Communities with downriver drinking water intakes have been notified.
