A brother and sister team are launching a new program called "Code With Me" in Salem. They're hoping its a way to help kids make the most of their summer.

The free, five-week course will give students in the Salem-Keizer School District a chance to learn the basics of coding.

The classes are taught by Megha Joshi, a current Yale University student studying computer science and a South Salem High School alumna, and her brother Mihir Joshi, who is still a high school student in the district. The classes are open to kids in first through eighth grade.

The siblings were inspired to create the course after realizing how many summer camps were being canceled due to the pandemic.

Megha said these classes are a way to get kids prepared for college without breaking the bank.

"People think that the field itself is really hard, but it's just a lot of syntax and things you have to get used to. So, we were thinking it would be great if people in the Salem-Keizer area could get this exposure at a lot earlier age," she said.

If your child is interested in the free program, you can learn more at the Code With Me website.
