Man shot and killed by Gresham officer identified

Police identified the man who was shot and killed by a Gresham police officer in Southeast Portland late Sunday night.

Tuesday, police said the man is 49-year-old Israel Berry, of Southeast Portland.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office determined Berry died from a gunshot wound. His family has been notified of his death.

Police said Berry was involved in a reported disturbance in the 12400 block of Southeast Kelly Street. A 911 caller said he was making threats.

When officers arrived on scene, a Gresham officer fired shots, striking and killing a man, police said. The Portland officers witnessed the shooting and did not use deadly force.

The Gresham Police Department said their officers were providing mutual aid to Portland Sunday night while the Portland Police Bureau responded to several large demonstration.

Detectives with the Portland Police Bureau's Homicide Division, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, and the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office are investigating the incident.
