DENVER — A carjacking suspect was shot and killed by an officer after stealing a patrol vehicle and leading a short chase on Monday afternoon, the Denver Police Department said.

Officers responded to reports of a carjacking at West Sixth Avenue and Santa Fe Drive.

Police Chief Paul Pazen said an officer saw the suspect, then got out of the vehicle and began to give chase.

The suspect was able to circle back, got in to the patrol vehicle and took off. The suspect was then able to gain possession of a police weapon inside the vehicle.

Pazen said there are some reports the suspect pointed the police weapon at people near West Sixth Avenue and Federal Boulevard.

The suspect led officers on a chase until being shot near West Eighth Avenue and Zuni Street. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.

The shooting will be jointly investigated by the Aurora Police Department, the Denver District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Independent Monitor.
