Mobile home in Sunland Park, New Mexico, engulfed in flames

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KFOX14) — Smoke billowed from the scene of a house fire in the early daylight hours in Sunland Park, New Mexico.

Personnel from several agencies went Thursday to the home on Mesquite Drive near Monte Vista Court and Valle Vista Drive.

Sunland Park police and firefighters responded, along with Santa Teresa firefighters, West Valley firefighters and Dona Ana County sheriff’s deputies.

Andres Burciaga, fire chief for Sunland Park Fire Dept., said the double-wide mobile home was fully engulfed when they arrived.

The strong winds made it difficult for firefighters to put out the fire, said Burciaga.

Reporter Simon Williams who was at the scene throughout the morning, said a man at the scene was waiting to get information about his niece from authorities.

Neighbors stood outside as emergency responders worked to extinguish the fire. The neighbors, along with two women, stood near the yellow police tape, waiting to get information from the officers and firefighters.

Six people inside managed to get out of the home, said Burciaga. Marisa Munoz, 8, was the only person who wasn't accounted for. She was listed missing, but her body was later found, according to officials.

The KFOX14 SkyCam drone showed an aerial view of the damage left behind. The entire home was charred in the fire. The blaze started around 3:30 a.m.

A Red Cross unit was seen leaving the scene. Officials say Red Cross is providing assistance to the victims.

A New Mexico fire marshal is looking into what caused the fire.

The investigation is expected to take a couple of days.
