Fireworks sales started up in Oregon and Washington on Sunday, and fire officials stress that everyone "keep it legal and safe."

In Oregon, you can't have any fireworks that fly, explode, or travel more than 12 feet horizontally on the ground without a permit.

In the City of Vancouver, fireworks are banned entirely.

In the past five years, more than 1,200 fires have been started in Oregon because of fireworks. If you get caught with illegal fireworks, you could face a stiff fine.

Even though you can buy fireworks starting June 23, that doesn't mean you can start lighting them up. Most towns limit the days to on or around July 4 and set start and end times every day.

The last day to legally buy fireworks is July 6.

Fireworks rules vary from town to town, county to county, and state to state. The best thing to do is check with your city and county regulations before you light off any fireworks.
