Forecasters are now warning the public about the potential for large waves and hazardous surf conditions along the Washington and Oregon Coast this week.

A High Surf Advisory for the North and Central Coast in Washington is in effect until 10 a.m. Friday.

As for Oregon, a High Surf Advisory is in effect for the South Coast until 7 p.m. Friday and in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday in the Central and North Coast.

A High Surf Advisory is also in effect in parts of California.

"Destructive waves may wash over beaches, jetties, and other structures unexpectedly. People can be swept off rocks and jetties and drown while observing high surf," forecasters cautioned. "There is also an enhanced threat for sneaker waves, which can unexpectedly run up the beach even further than the already large waves."

The water could mix with debris on the beach to create additional hazards.

"Keep away from large logs on the beach. Sneaker waves can run up on the beach lifting or rolling these extremely heavy logs," forecasters said. "People have been injured after being caught under these logs from sneaker wave action."

There's also the potential for property damage.

"A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches, producing rip currents, sneaker waves and beach erosion. Stay well back from the water's edge and be alert for exceptionally high waves," forecasters said. "Minor beach erosion may damage coastal properties and buildings. Higher than normal water run-up is expected on beaches and low-lying shoreline."
