SEATTLE -- Seattle police now say they arrested 57 people during the riots in the city on Saturday evening as hundreds of buildings and businesses suffered damage.

"In the early hours of the day, many of these groups were demonstrating peacefully, but by midafternoon several incidents quickly devolved into situations that endangered the lives of those demonstrating as well as our officers," SPD officials wrote in a blotter post detailing a timeline of Saturday's events.

They said the demonstrations began to grow around 2:45 p.m. and by 4 p.m., there were an estimated 10,000 involved in the protests across the city.

Among the thousands, dozens became violent and began burning cars and causing property damage. By dawn Sunday, hundreds of buildings were damaged in Downtown Seattle while another 90 businesses were hit by rioters in the International District.

At least six SPD officers suffered minor injuries as some community members, officials said.

Of the 57 eventually arrested Saturday, most were being held for investigation of burglary and assault.
