MISSOULA – A poll by University of Montana researchers found a majority of registered Montana voters support legalizing marijuana.
The online survey was part of UM’s Big Sky Poll and was commissioned by the UM Social Science Research Laboratory.
The survey found 51% of registered Montana voters supported legalizing marijuana and 37% opposed it.
A further breakdown shows 88% of Democrats supported legalization compared to 33% of Republicans.
Respondents ages 18-26 and 27-46 showed strong support for legalization with 67% and 64% of the age groups answering “yes” respectively, according to a news release.
Fifty-six percent of respondents between 47 and 66 years old supported legalization while 29% of voters 67 and older showed support.
The Big Sky Poll was conducted online between Feb. 21 and March 1 with 293 registered voters in the state of Montana.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.72 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
