Jefferson City Police continued their search efforts Thursday morning for the second runaway involved in Wednesday afternoons police presence.

Lt. Dave Williams confirmed Jefferson City Police Officer attempted to contact the occupants of a motor vehicle in the 1000 block of Booneville Road for a driving violation around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Williams said before the officer activating his emergency equipment, the vehicle, a black Ford Mustang, abruptly pulled to curb and both subjects fled on foot.

During the follow-up investigation, police determined that the two individuals had committed a weapons offense and assault in the 200 blocks of Belair Drive.

Williams said it appeared that the suspects were in the area attempting to purchase narcotics and a disturbance occurred that resulted in two vehicles chasing each other.

According to a news release, while the vehicles traveled down Belair Drive, the occupants of the Ford Mustang fired at the other car.

Williams said an uninvolved citizen’s vehicle in the area was struck during the chase. The victim’s vehicle sustained damage, but the driver was not injured.

During the initial search, officers were able to identify both suspects.

Police did not release their names but said an 18-year-old Jefferson City resident was taken into custody. Charges were being requested through the Cole County Prosecutors Office for unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and assault 2nd degree.

Jefferson City Police Officers continued search efforts for the second suspect from the Mustang as well as the occupants of the second vehicle that left the original disturbance.
