The students of Belair Elementary school received a hands-on fire safety visit from the Jefferson City Fire Department during a Tuesday visit.

The Mobile Fire Safety Unit features three rooms; a kitchen, living room, and bedroom.

Each of the rooms includes different fire safety tips and instructional videos for the kids to learn and participate in.

During the program, the students climb out of a window when the smoke alarm goes off in the bedroom section of the unit.

Emily Roberts, a kindergarten teacher at Belair Elementary, said the program is a good way for students to practice what to do in potentially scary real-life situations.

"We want to make sure they feel comfortable, and they're not scared about the situations," Roberts said. "And they just feel like they know what they're doing and they can be the responsible one and react when there is an emergency."

The hands-on program is paired with lessons in class to make sure the information sinks in for the students.

Firefighters said their hope is conversations about fire safety will continue in a home setting.
