Tensions after De’Von Bailey continue, highlighted through Colorado Springs MLK march

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Hundreds marched along Tejon Street Monday to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr., ending at Acacia Park. When speakers took the stage, it became clear the killing of De'Von Bailey was still on the mind of many.

"If we remain silent about police brutality right here in Colorado Springs, we are not living out Dr. King's legacy," said Rosemary Lytle, Colorado's NAACP President.

Bailey was shot on Aug. 3 by two CSPD officers following a report of a robbery.

Body camera footage was released in the wake of the shooting, and it shows Bailey running away from officers just before they're about to search him for a weapon. The video appears to show Bailey holding an item in his shorts while running away, and that's when the officers open fire.

A grand jury later ruled that both officers were justified in the shooting. Despite the ruling, tensions between Bailey supporters and the city haven't smoothed over.

Lytle said, "The one that we celebrate today, would be speaking out against police brutality, would be speaking out for a person named De'Von Bailey."

After months of unrest, and several protests, today's march was different.

"Today was peaceful, we didn't have any issues," said Stanley Brooks Jr.

The conversation among African-American communities is starting to shift, without forgetting about what happened to Bailey.

Garrett Robinson, a marcher in the crowd said, "It takes one person to make a change and we all continue to grow as people, we'll make a change."

With many young people in the crowd, speakers encouraged young leaders to get involved in local politics in the hope of changing the process and policy should another shooting happen again.
